WAYNE, N.J. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | For the second time this week, the
New Jersey City University women's soccer headed to overtime on the road in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game knotted at 1-1, but unlike its game Wednesday night in Newark, NJCU couldn't find golden goal magic on this occasion. Freshman midfielder
Mallensy Vargas (North Bergen, N.J./Memorial) scored an unassisted game-tying goal for the second time this week in the 73rd minute but William Paterson University scored on a loose ball in the 103rd minute and survived for a 2-1 double overtime win against NJCU in its Homecoming game at Pioneer Soccer Park on October 1.
Â
William Paterson (7-2-1, 2-2-0 NJAC) had all three shots in overtime and got the game-winner at the 102:54 mark when
Kristen Bowe netted her fifth of the year, gathering a loose ball and beating a defender before striking it inside the right post from the left wing. The Pioneers outshot NJCU, 17-3.
Â
NJCU (4-4-1, 1-3-0 NJAC) fell back to .500 despite
Vargas' ninth goal of the season and third of the week. Down 1-0 with 17:11 remaining in regulation, she tracked down a loose ball and buried it top shelf from 10 yards out on her only shot of the game. She had scored the game-winner at Rutgers-Newark on September 28 for a 2-1 NJCU win—a golden goal that was a
SportsCenter Top 10 highlight.
Â
William Paterson led 1-0 at the half, outshooting NJCU 9-0 in the first 45 minutes, but only scoring on a goal by
Lauren McHugh at the 41:06 mark. Her third tally of the season came from 15 yards out from the left wing off an assist from
Adrianna Oliveira. Marisa Adelman had a game-high five shots (two on goal) for the Pioneers.
Â
Junior goalkeeper
Paula Viana (Elizabeth, N.J./Hamilton Prep Academy) kept the Gothic Knights alive with five saves in her 102:54.
Angela Sandelli made two saves for WPU.
Â
William Paterson was a player down for more than 64 minutes after a 39th minute straight red card to
Darcy Perez.
