Strong First Half Carries Ramapo Past NJCU, 3-1

MAHWAH, N.J. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Sophomore forward Theo Sanoh (Jersey City, N.J./Dickinson) scored his ninth goal of the season in the 50th minute but Ramapo College outshot the New Jersey City University men's soccer team, 20-3 in the first half when it scored twice, and held off the Gothic Knights, 3-1, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game on October 15 at the Ramapo Athletic Center.

Ramapo (9-3-2, 2-3-2 NJAC) picked up three points in the conference standings while NJCU (8-7-1, 0-7-0 NJAC), dropped its sixth straight game—all in league play—and is winless in its last seven outings after starting the season a school record 7-0-0. Each team had six second half shots.

Freshman midfielder Bashar Elsherif (Princeton Junction, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro South) collected his first career assist on NJCU's lone goal.

Ramapo struck in the 15th and 33rd minutes before adding another just 2:10 into the second half. Neither team could find the net in the final 40 minutes.

Justin Olaya netted his fourth goal of the season 14:41 into the game off a double assist from Trevor Albrecht and Jorge Castro, before Edward Franzoni scored the eventual winner at the 32:34 mark, putting away a corner kick by Albrecht, who notched two assists in the game. Ryan Campbell's 11th goal of the season—an unassisted strike—made it 3-0 at 47:10.

Freshman goalkeeper Adam Cassidy (Jersey City, N.J./Dickinson via County Prep) played the first half and stopped eight shots in 45 minutes before being relieved at halftime by freshman Steven Pires (Hillside, N.J./Hillside), who stopped two shots in the second half.

Ryan Sprague made five saves for the Roadrunners as six of NJCU's nine shots were on goal.

OF NOTE:
  • Series: Ramapo leads all-time series, 21-19-5. Ramapo has won the last four meetings.

WHAT'S NEXT?
NJCU will play its third straight road game and its final non-conference contest of the season on Wednesday, October 19 at 7:30 p.m. when it faces Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pa. First-year head coach Joseph Cullen served as the Greyhounds' assistant coach for two seasons (2014-15) before coming to Jersey City. It will be the first-ever meeting in men's soccer between NJCU and Moravian.
