New Jersey City University men's volleyball team loves being on the court and the Gothic Knights demonstrated that on February 14 with a pair of Skyline Conference sweeps. NJCU moved to 3-0 and in first place in the conference by blanking Yeshiva University, 3-0 (25-21, 25-7, 25-8) in a neutral court match before posting a 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-16) win over host St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn).
NJCU (7-4) moved to 31-0 all-time against Yeshiva (1-6, 1-2 Skyline) while facing the Bears (1-3, 0-2 Skyline) for the first time ever.
MATCH 1: New Jersey City University 3, Yeshiva University 0 (25-21, 25-7, 25-8)The Gothic Knights needed just 50 minutes to roll past the Maccabees. NJCU hit an impressive .377 on attack with 32 kills (32-9-61) and doubled the offensive output of Yeshiva (16 kills, .088).
Sophomore middle hitter
Jalen Sorrell (Edison, NJ/John P. Stevens) hit an outstanding .667 with six kills and no errors (nine attempts) while freshman middle hitter
Marquise Sanon (Newark, NJ/Shiloh (Snellville, GA)) notched a .625 attack with six putaways (6-1-8) in only one set of action.
Senior middle
Ivan Prensa (Jersey City, NJ/Dickinson) played the final two sets off the bench and had a team-high seven kills while hitting .545 (7-1-11). Senior outside hitter
Sheldon Coure (Redondo Beach, CA/Redondo Union) was one of five players with multiple aces as NJCU uncorked 16 as a team; he landed four aces.
Freshman setter
Erick Nascimento (Miami, FL/Alonzo Tracy Mourning) distributed 20 assists and two aces in two sets while senior right side/setter
Kendall Tribbett (Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway Regional) added 10 assists.
MATCH 2: New Jersey City University 3, St. Joseph's Brooklyn 0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-16)Sheldon Coure led a .371 attack with a match-best 10 kills as the Knights swept the host Bears in an hour. NJCU had a 38-18 margin in kills. For
Coure it was the 19th time he's had double digits in winners in three years.
Coure hit .533 with 10 kills and
Tribbett posted a .667 attack with eight kills and no errors (12 attempts).
Prensa had nine kills (9-5-18, .222), three aces and three blocks (two solo). Senior outside
Daque Wilcox (Fredericksburg, VA/Camden County Tech, NJ) added seven kills in 13 swings for a .308 percentage with three aces and two blocks.
Nascimento quarterbacked the offense with 27 assists and four aces.
Sanon hit .300 (4-1-10).
