Women’s Basketball Season Ends in Loss at Rutgers-Camden

CAMDEN, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Rutgers University-Camden scored the first 18 points of the game and clinched a New Jersey Athletic Conference Tournament berth in a 67-29 win over the New Jersey City University women's basketball on February 17.
 
NJCU shot 21.8 percent (12-55), trailed 20-2 at the end of the first quarter and 29-9 at halftime and was never competitive in the game. The loss ends NJCU's season at 1-23 (0-18 NJAC, lost 21). Rutgers-Camden won its third consecutive game to finish the regular season 15-9 and 10-8 to set up an NJAC Quarterfinal game at third-seeded Stockton.
 
NJCU's top performer was junior forward Ziyadah Williams (Jersey City, NJ/University Academy Charter) who had 10 rebounds—all on the defensive glass.
 
Three-year captain and senior forward Deseree Johnson (Red Bank, NJ/Monmouth Regional) scored eight points with five rebounds, four assists and three steals in 35 minutes in the final game of her collegiate career. She finished the 2015-16 season with career records for three-point baskets (114) and a single-season record 57 threes. She also notched 729 points and 545 rebounds in her 93 career games. Freshman guard Christine Bizub (Fort Lee, NJ/Fort Lee) scored eight (3-6 FG; 2-5 3FG).
 
Camden's Kamari Talley, a four-time NJAC Player of the Week and a Player of the Year candidate, scored 25 points on 11-of-24 shooting and hauled in 13 rebounds for her 19th double-double of the season.
 
Alexis Sommers was 5-of-5 from the field for 11 points in 19 reserve minutes and Gabby Greene added 10 points (4-6, 2-4 3FG). Caroline Santiago (12 rebounds) and Michelle Obasi (eight rebounds, seven points, three blocks) also contributed.
 
Camden had a 53-35 differential on the offensive glass and hit 17 more field goals than NJCU, converting 29-of-69 (.420). The Knights trailed 49-20 at the end of three quarters. The largest Camden lead was the final 38-point margin as the Scarlet Raptors outscored NJCU 19-8 in the fourth quarter.
