Defending NJAC Champ Ramapo Sweeps #NJCUSB

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Ramapo College, the defending New Jersey Athletic Conference champion, scored seven runs in the sixth inning in game one and limited New Jersey City University to two hits in game two as the Roadrunners swept an NJAC doubleheader on April 6, 14-2 and 8-0, both in six innings.

On a cold day with brisk winds at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex, Ramapo extended its winning streak to nine in a row and improved to 13-5 (4-0 NJAC). NJCU, after an eight-game winning streak, fell to 11-9 overall and 0-4 in the NJAC.

Game 1: Ramapo College 14, New Jersey City University 2 (6 innings)
Sophomore center fielder Christina Brizek (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock) drove in three runs, batting 2-for-4 a home run, double and two runs scored and sophomore second baseman Ally Spellman (Bloomingdale, NJ/Butler) knocked in three runs while batting 3-for-3 with a double, triple and two runs.

Brianna Rosario tripled and scored in game one.

Ramapo scored three runs in the first and second innings to claim a 6-1 lead and up by five runs, enforced the eight-run rule when 13 women came to the plate in the top of the sixth when the Roadrunners scored seven times.

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Katrina Buczkowski (Buffalo, NY) won (5-3), striking out five without issuing a walk. She allowed two runs and six hits in 6.0 innings.

Freshman shortstop Harper Patsko (Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Regional) walked three times and scored three runs while senior catcher Melissa Moreno (Cranford, NJ/Cranford) added two runs while also drawing three walks. Senior third baseman Mikayla Melendez (Woodland Park, NJ/Passaic Valley), senior designated player Melanie Walling (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) and junior first baseman Nicole Mahoney (Ringwood, NJ/Lakeland) each had two hits, one RBI and a run scored.

NJCU had six hits. Rookie catcher Hannah Gavin (Bordentown, N.J./Bordentown) had a hit, run and RBI. Sophomore left fielder Juliana Squeo (Carlstadt, N.J./Becton Regional) doubled and junior shortstop Brianna Rosario (Roselle, N.J./Abraham Clark) tripled.

NJCU senior right-handed pitcher Jayla Lee Vega (Hoboken, N.J./Hoboken) took the loss (6-3), striking out two against six walks in 5.0 innings before freshman righty Christina Mezey (Jersey City, N.J./Saint Dominic Academy) pitched the sixth, giving up three earned runs.

In the first inning, Patsko walked, Brizek had a ground rule double to right center and Patsko scored on a wild pitch. Moreno walked and Melendez had an RBI single up the middle before Mahoney singled up the left field line for a 3-0 advantage.

NJCU got a run back in the bottom of the inning. Gavin led off with a single, junior first baseman Brittany Paulikas (Fords, N.J./John F. Kennedy Memorial) hit a long fly ball into the wind in center that was dropped and Vega followed with a run-scoring single to the left-center gap scoring Gavin.

In the second inning, RCNJ had two on with no outs after a hit by pitch and walk, and Brizek ripped a line drive into the wind that carried over the left center field fence for a three-run homer and a 6-1 lead.

After a hit batter opened the third for the second inning in a row, Spellman hit a fly ball that carried over the NJCU right fielder into the wind for a run-scoring triple.

Rosario led off the bottom of the fifth with a ground ball through the right side of the infield. The RCNJ right fielder dove to cut it off but it went under her glove and all the way to the wall for a triple; Gavin had a fly ball to left for a sacrifice fly for the second run.

But up 7-2, Ramapo put the game away with seven runs (four unearned) when 13 women came to the plate in the sixth. RCNJ walked three times and took advantage of two errors. A bases loaded walk followed by a two-run double by Spellman did much of the damage before a sac fly by Moreno and an RBI single by Walling pushed the lead to a dozen.

Game 2: Ramapo College 8, New Jersey City University 0 (6 innings)
Brizek took the circle in game two for Ramapo and was impressive. She improved to 8-1 on the year, allowing two hits in a 6.0 inning shutout. She fanned five, walked none and faced two batters over the minimum over 68 pitches.

Melendez was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs and Moreno knocked in a pair of runs while scoring twice. Patsko added two hits.

Gavin and sophomore second baseman Cristina Otero (Jersey City, N.J./North Bergen) had NJCU's hits. Mezey took the loss (5-5). She struck out one, walked one and allowed five earned runs. NJCU committed two errors.

RCNJ scored three in the top of the first to stake its pitcher to a lead. It later added two runs in the second and fifth innings and the game-clinching run in the sixth.

Ramapo had four consecutive hits to lead off the first inning in game two—a double by Patsko and single by Brizek before both scored on a two-run single up the middle by Moreno. Mahoney singled to second to drive in the third run.

In the third inning, Ramapo scored twice on an RBI double by Melendez and a sac fly. By the end of the inning, the first eight batters in the lineup all had collected a hit two times through the batting order.  Ramapo added two unearned runs in the fifth before a sixth-inning sac fly by Melendez plated Moreno, who had walked, with the eighth run.
