Ramapo Sweeps NJCU Women’s Volleyball

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Ramapo College hit at a .313 pace and forced the New Jersey City University women's volleyball team into 26 attack errors as the Roadrunners swept the New Jersey Athletic Conference match, 3-0 (25-15, 25-9, 25-15) on September 22 at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center ("Coach Charlie Brown Court").
 
Ramapo (12-3, 2-0 NJAC), a conference championship contender, won its eighth straight match led by junior All-American outside hitter Larysa Iwaskiw (Westwood, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) who had 15 kills and nearly matched the NJCU output, as she hit .406 with only two attack errors (.32 attempts). She contributed eight digs and three assists.
 
The Gothic Knights dropped their second straight after a three-match winning streak, and are now 6-4 (0-3 NJAC). NJCU hit -.105 in the loss.
 
Ramapo had a sideout percentage of 75 percent or better in all three sets, capped by 13-of-16 (81 percent) in game three and 32-of-41 (78 percent) on the night. NJCU was limited to a 41 percent sideout percentage (30-73).
 
The Roadrunners also received eight kills and a .429 percent (8-2-14) from senior middle blocker Emily Guzman (Clifton, N.J./Clifton) with two blocks. No other player had more than four kills.
 
In a two-setter system, senior Rachel Selmore (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) delivered 10 assists and had four kills in six swings (.667) with a pair of blocks. Freshman setter Kate Shirkey (Roxbury, N.J./Roxbury) dished 15 assists.
 
Sophomore outside Amber O'Donnell (East Newark, N.J./Harrison) was NJCU's top performer with 10 digs and four kills. Junior setter Rachel McIntyre (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) collected 15 assists and seven digs.
 
Ramapo had 10 kills in game one with only three attack errors while forcing NJCU into 10 bad swings (-.114). With NJCU ahead 6-5, Ramapo seized control with a 9-0 run behind the serving of junior Sarah Mulligan (Manorville, N.Y.). Ramapo had three blocks during the stretch, with freshman middle Samantha Main (Fair Lawn, N.J./Fair Lawn) involved in all three plays—two combined with Selmore. Ramapo cruised to the 10-point win.
 
Ramapo never trailed in game two and leading 11-6, scored 14 of the final 17 points and seven straight to cap the set with Iwaskiw and Guzman chalking up two kills apiece to close the set. Ramapo had 15 kills in the third set and only four attack errors to win by 10 points to sweep the encounter.
 
OF NOTE:
  • Series: Ramapo leads, 27-18, and has won the last 10 meetings since NJCU's last win—a 3-0 decision in the 2007 NJAC Semifinals.
  • Larysa Iwaskiw entered the match ranked No. 1 in Division III in total attacks and attacks per set and second in kills per set, total kills and points per set.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
NJCU is off until Tuesday, September 27 at 7 p.m. when it hosts William Paterson University in another NJAC match. The Pioneers leads the all-time series, 38-12, and have won the last seven meetings since NJCU's last victory in 2008.
