JERSEY CITY, N.J. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Rutgers University-Newark scored once in each half and the
New Jersey City University men's soccer team—the top scoring offense in the New Jersey Athletic Conference—was shutout for the second straight outing in a 2-0 setback to the Scarlet Raiders in an NJAC home game on September 28 at the Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field.
Freshman forward
Fabio De Sousa (Long Branch, N.J./Saint Benedict's Prep) had a part in both goals, notching a goal and an assist for Rutgers-Newark (10-2-0, 2-1-0 NJAC), which won its fourth in a row. NJCU fell to 8-3-1 (0-3-0 NJAC).
Newark outshot NJCU, 19-14, and scored in the 28th and 58th minutes. Freshman goalkeeper
Adam Cassidy (Jersey City, N.J./County Prep) made eight saves but had no chance at the two goals the Raiders converted.
Newark rookie keeper
Andres Medina (Manalapan, N.J./Saint Benedict's Prep) made five saves to give RUN its fifth shutout in its last seven games, tying NJCU for second most in the league.
Freshman midfielder
Breno Lustosa (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) scored what proved to be the game-winner with his first collegiate tally when he netted a diving header in a scrum on the far right post off a corner kick from
De Sousa in the right endline at 27:38.
RUN led 1-0 at the half, outshooting NJCU 9-6 in the opening 45 minutes. The Raiders got insurance at the 57:38 mark when senior forward
Dylan Elias (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick) made a nice run onto the right wing and sent a ball across the box to a streaking
De Sousa, who put away his seventh goal and 20th point of the season.
Medina was able to make two diving stops to keep NJCU off the board.
De Sousa had a game-high six shots (three on target for RUN). Sophomore forward
Omar Ventura (
Fairview, N.J./Cliffside Park) led NJCU with five shots (two on goal).
