89th Minute Penalty Kick the Difference as Moravian Tops #NJCUMSOC

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Moravian College was granted its second penalty kick of the game with 1:29 left in the game and capitalized on that 89th minute chance to snap a 1-1 deadlock and defeat New Jersey City University, 2-1, in a non-conference men's soccer game on October 18 at the Robert L. McNulty Soccer Field.

Approaching 90 seconds remaining, NJCU's throw in from the deep far corner was won by Moravian, which headed the ball to junior midfielder Brendan Docherty (Westwood, N.J.), who tried to split two defenders and fell on the play. The Greyhounds were granted their second penalty kick of the game and senior midfielder Brett Lubben (Oradell, N.J.) struck a ball into the near left side.

Moravian improved to 7-4-3 with the second one-goal win against NJCU (4-10-2) in the last two seasons. The Gothic Knight losing streak reached eight games, including three straight and four overall by one-goal margins.

Senior forward Gabriel Luzbet (East Newark, NJ/Harrison) scored his first goal of the season late in the 60th minute on a rebound of his own shot to tie it at 1-1 after Moravian led 1-0 at halftime, courtesy of the fourth goal of the season from sophomore midfielder Dylan Evande (Hackensack, N.J.). Junior mid David Durski (Jamesburg, N.J.) assisted on that 41st minute scoring play.

Rookie goalkeeper Aldahir Cazun (Jersey City, NJ/Dickinson) made his third start of the season and made six saves, including a diving stop of a penalty kick in the 26th minute. Moravian senior keeper Bryan Yaskowski (Hillsborough, N.J.) made seven saves. NJCU outshot the Greyhounds, 21-19.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
In a first half where NJCU outshot the Greyhounds, 11-6, Moravian had the two best opportunities. NJCU's best chance came in the 17th minute when a long free kick by freshman center back Mike Almeida (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) took a hop that forced Yaskowski to backpedal at the last second, push the ball up and off the crossbar and barely kept it in front of the line to prevent a goal.

In the 26th minute, Cazun was called for a foul in the box on a 1-on-1 breakaway. Senior midfielder Connor Phillips (Brodheadsville, Pa.), who made his only other penalty kick attempt this season, fired towards the far left post but Cazun chose correctly, stopping it with two hands.

Moravian eventually did strike with 4:31 remaining in the half as Durski slid a pass from the left wing to the middle of the box. Cazun got a piece of the shot by Evande but it trickled inside the left post.

In the second half, Cazun made two plays to keep the deficit one. In the 47th minute, he tipped a 40-yard free kick by Lubben up and over the crossbar. He somehow kept a near misplay of a shot by Evande out of the net in the 55th minute. In the 51st minute, Yaskowski dove to his right to thwart a shot from junior forward Theo Sanoh (Jersey City, NJ/Dickinson).

NJCU tied it at the 59:55 mark. Luzbet wound up for a shot inside the penalty arc that caromed off the defense. He immediately followed the rebound, skipping a second chance into the far left side netting to even the game.

It was an even final 30 minutes with few dangerous chances until Moravian's penalty kick opportunity late allowed the visitors to prevail.

OF NOTE:
  • Series: Second meeting. Moravian, leads, 2-0, winning last year by a 1-0 outcome. It was the first meeting in Jersey City.
  • NJCU has been outscored 16-5 in the first half this season.

UP NEXT:
  • NJCU plays its final road game of the season on Saturday, October 21 when it visits Stockton University in Galloway, N.J. The Ospreys are 11-3-3, 2-3-2 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference, and an impressive 7-1-1 at home. It will be the 45th meeting between the schools and Stockton leads all time, 31-7-6, including last year in Jersey City, 3-1.
