Montalvo, Neal Score Double Digits in Season Opener; #NJCUWBB Falls to Lehman

BRONX, N.Y. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | In the first meeting between the two sides since the 2011-12 season, New Jersey City University women's basketball fell to Lehman College, 81-42, on November 15 inside the APEX. The Lightning outscored the Gothic Knights, 28-8, in the first quarter and led, 45-18, at the intermission. The non-conference game was the season opener for both schools.

In her Gothic Knights' debut, freshman point guard Mya Neal (East Orange, NJ/Newark Tech) led the team with 11 points and five rebounds, while junior point guard Jesenia Montalvo (Hillside, NJ/Bayonne) scored 10 points and grabbed four boards in her first game with NJCU since last playing during the 2014-15 season.

Despite the loss, NJCU outrebounded Lehman, 42-37, and held a 16-6 advantage in second chance points. Lehman shot 50 percent from the field for the game. In a sloppy opening game, the two sides combined for 72 turnovers.

Three Lehman players scored in double digits as Alliyah Dorsett and Ayanna Behagen each scored 19 points in 26 minutes, and Lynda Fields chipped in 18 points in only 25 minutes of action. Dorsett pulled down seven rebounds (six defensive) and forced eight steals. Selena Lopez added eight points and eight rebounds as the junior forward earned all her points from the charity stripe (8-10).

OF NOTE:
  • Series: 8th meeting. Lehman leads all-time series, 5-3.
  • First meeting since January 30, 2012 when the game was played on a neutral court at Baruch College due to court damage at Lehman.
