William Paterson Defeats #NJCUWBB Behind Balanced Attack, Quick Start

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | William Paterson University scored at least 20 points in three of the four quarters and outscored the New Jersey City University women's basketball team 46-17 in the first half before producing an 85-41 outcome in New Jersey Athletic Conference action on November 29 at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center ("Coach Charlie Brown Court"). The game was NJCU's first home conference matchup of the season.
 
In a sloppy game that saw a combined 81 turnovers (48 for NJCU, 33 for WP), the Pioneers scored 43 points off Gothic Knight giveaways.
 
The Pioneers moved to 4-1 (2-0 NJAC) as they took 42 free throw attempts while limiting the Gothic Knights (0-6, 0-2 NJAC) to 16 trips to the charity stripe. WP used a balanced attack while holding a 39-12 advantage in bench points and outscoring NJCU, 40-10, in the paint. The visitors shot almost 51 percent from the floor compared to NJCU's 31 percent shooting and the Pioneers were above 50 percent in three of the four quarters.
 
Junior point guard Jesenia Montalvo (Hillside, NJ/Bayonne) led the Gothic Knights with 14 points (4-4 FT), five rebounds and four steals in 35 minutes on the court. Freshman point guard Marymone Graham (Asbury Park, NJ/Asbury Park) chipped in a season-high eight points, including a pair of threes, while freshman center Kiara Wood (Asbury Park, NJ/Asbury Park) produced six points and six boards in 24 minutes of work.
 
Four Pioneers scored in double digits as junior guard Julie Rovito (Ridgefield Park, N.J.) earned a game-high 18 points (6-12 FG, 6-8 FT), secured five rebounds and dished out a game-high four helpers in only 17 minutes on the court. In only 20 minutes of play, senior forward Tori Woetzel (Wyckoff, N.J.) added 13 points (6-7 FG), five rebounds and a game-high matching four assists.
 
Freshman guard Danica DeFrank (Fairfield, N.J.) chipped in 10 points (4-6 FG, 2-2 3FG) and seven steals in 18 minutes of action, while freshman forward Sierra Strong (Howell, N.J.) made the most of her first career start with 11 points (5-9 FG) and six caroms. Four other players scored at least six points.
 
OF NOTE:
  • Series: 72nd meeting. William Paterson leads, 61-11 (won last five).
  • Jesenia Montalvo (Hillside, NJ/Bayonne) scored in double figures for the fifth time in six games this season and the sixth in 14 career games over two seasons for NJCU.
  • Marymone Graham (Asbury Park, NJ/Asbury Park) scored a season-high eight points in a game for the second time in the last three games.

The Gothic Knights travel to Rutgers-Camden on Saturday, December 2 (1 p.m.). It will be the 60th meeting between the two sides and R-C leads the all-time series, 35-24.
