No. 17 #NJCUMBB Wins 10th Game, Bounces Back Against Shenandoah

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Junior point guard Shaquan Worthy (Trenton, NJ/Trenton Central) scored 15 points and dished seven assists to spark four players in double figures and nationally No. 17 ranked New Jersey City University used a 14-3 run in the middle of the second half to pull away from Shenandoah University, 68-55, in the third-place game of the Captains Shootout on December 30. NJCU went 1-1 on the weekend at Christopher Newport University's Freeman Center.
 
NJCU, entering the game No. 17 in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25 national poll, improved to 10-1, defeating the Hornets (6-5) in the first-ever meeting between the schools in men's basketball. Junior center Yuri Brutus (Roselle, NJ/Roselle Park) was named to the All-Tournament Team for the Gothic Knights.
 
NJCU trailed by one at halftime (32-31) and it was tied 38-38 with 11:53 to play before the Gothic Knights ignited. Worthy was one of five players to score during the 14-3 run, hitting a three with 7:23 to go before NJCU pushed the lead to 11, 51-42, with 6:16 remaining. NJCU led by as many as 14 points in the final two minutes.
 
Worthy was 4-of-7 from the field and 5-of-5 from the line while sophomore power forward Sam Toney (Plainfield, NJ/Williamstown) chalked up 16 points, seven rebounds, four steals and two blocks in 27 minutes. Brutus added 11 points (3-7 FG) and eight rebounds and junior small forward James Julius (Linden, NJ/Linden) had a sensational rebounding effort with 14 boards (nine defensive). Junior shooting guard Lavrone Green (Teaneck, NJ/Teaneck) finished with 13 points.

Shenandoah got a double-double effort of 24 points (9-19 FG, 4-9 3FG) and 10 rebounds from Kwa McDonald, but not much production from the rest of its squad.
