New Jersey City University had a near 3:1 margin in kills as the Gothic Knights swung past St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn), 3-0 (25-11, 25-15, 25-23) in a Skyline Conference match on March 21 at The Hill Center.
NJCU had a 38-13 margin in kills and hit .206 as a team as the Knights evened their Skyline mark at 2-2, while improving to 8-11 overall. The hosts Bears (2-19, 0-3 Skyline) have lost four straight and are just 1-8 at home.
Freshman right side/middle hitter
Julian Moreira (Miami, Fla./Alonzo and Tracy Mourning Biscayne Bay Campus) had yet another double figure effort at the net while freshman middle hitter
Kamran Chaudhry (Jersey City, N.J./Ferris) had a career day in the sweep.
Moreira had 11 kills—nearly as many as the entire other team—hitting .231 (11-5-26) with four digs and two blocks while
Chaudhry, who entered the day with just nine kills in 19 sets in 11 matches, posted a .538 attack percentage with seven kills and no errors (13 attempts), while adding two blocks.
Freshman outside hitter
Edgar Crespo (Newark, N.J./Science Park) had a nice effort with eight kills (8-2-21), a .286 clip, and 11 digs with sophomore libero
David Penaherrera (Harrison, NJ/Harrison) equaling him with a match-high 11 digs.
Freshman setter
Jimmy Vega (Harrison, N.J./Harrison), the Skyline Rookie of the Week, dished 31 assists with two aces. Freshman middle hitter/right side
Jonathan Andrews (Palisades Park, N.J./North Bergen) hit .500 in two sets of action, adding five kills (5-1-8).
Alec Smalley led the Bears with six kills and six digs.
Thomas Ambrosino finished with 10 digs while
Mark Antoun tallied 10 assists and three blocks. The Bears were limited to -.067 hitting on the night.
NJCU hit .357 in game one with 13 kills and a sizzling 90 percent sideout percentage (10-11). NJCU added 12 kills in game two when its sideout rate was 12-of-17 (75 percent).
