JERSEY CITY, N.J. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | In an odd twist of fate, a 2017 baseball season marred by constant weather-related postponements and cancellations ends—on a postseason cancellation.
The
New Jersey City University baseball team became postseason eligible with a 12-2 win over regionally-ranked NYU in its last outing on May 3 and at 18-18 was in position to qualify for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Tournament for the first time since 2005. However, the ECAC announced on May 8 that due to a lack of teams qualifying for the tournament that had not exhausted its maximum number of games or eligible weeks of competition, the 2017 edition of the tournament is cancelled.
With the cancellation, the 69th season of Gothic Knight baseball ends at .500 overall after NJCU won 13 games after April 1, including its final two of the season.
In all, NJCU had a school-record 22 dates postponed or ultimately cancelled against 12 different opponents, with two other home dates moved to the road. The Knights finished with 36 games played.
