Gothic Knights Fall in NJAC Opener at Camden

CAMDEN, N.J. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Rutgers University-Camden had 39 kills and hit .294 as a team in a 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-16) sweep of the New Jersey City University women's volleyball team in the New Jersey Athletic Conference opener for both schools on September 12 at the RUC Athletics Center.
 
Rutgers-Camden (4-3, 1-0 NJAC) won its ninth straight meeting after NJCU (3-4, 0-1 NJAC) had won the first 15 in the series. The Scarlet Raptors served 13 aces.
 
Two players led the Raptors offensively as senior outside hitter Cortnee Wilkerson (Los Angeles, Calif.) hit .421 with 10 kills (10-2-19), five aces and five digs and sophomore outside Jamie Mulligan (New Gretna, N.J.) tallied 11 kills, hitting .400 (11-3-20).
 
Sophomore Meghan Gallagher (Sicklerville, N.J.) paced the Raptors with 17 assists while sophomore setter Caitlynn Marcano (Williamstown, N.J.) finished with nine assists and four aces. Sophomore libero Natalie DiGiacomo (Williamstown, N.J.) defended 11 digs.
 
Senior setter Rachel McIntyre (Drexel Hill, PA/Upper Darby) collected 13 assists in the loss for the Gothic Knights. Five NJCU players had four or five kills and the Knights finished with 24 as a club.
 
RU-Camden was in double figures in kills in each game, including 16 in the first set when the Raptors hit .324 (16-5-34). Back-to-back kills by Wilkerson in the opening game helped the hosts build a 19-11 lead. Camden opened a small lead in the middle of the second set and NJCU stayed competitive but couldn't draw closer than four points.
 
The Knights led 15-12 in game three before RUC uncorked a 10-0 run behind the serving of Wilkerson to seize a 22-15 lead. She had four aces during the spurt.
 
OF NOTE:
  • Series: NJCU leads, 15-9, but Camden has won the last nine meetings.
 
UP NEXT:
  • NJCU is idle until Tuesday, September 19 when it will seek to even its record against Rutgers University-Newark at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center ('Coach Charlie Brown Court'). The Scarlet Raiders lead the all-time series, 37-10.
