BROOKLYN, N.Y. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | The record book for New Jersey City University (5-9-0) will be a little thicker after the Gothic Knights produced a lopsided 13-1 road victory over Medgar Evers College (0-12-0) on October 22 at the Aviator Sports Complex. The match was called in the 73rd minute, but not before NJCU got goals from six different players and matched or surpassed plenty of records.
 
For the Knights, the 13 goals scored tied a school record. They have reached that total twice before: September 8, 2014 against Medgar Evers (13-0), and October 13, 2003 against City College of New York (13-1).
 
The 37 points (13 goals and 11 assists) the Knights tallied set a school record, breaking the previous high of 35 in the CCNY match. Senior defensive midfielder Nina Carbonaro (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) and junior center mid Mallensy Vargas (North Bergen, NJ/Memorial) each generated hat tricks while three other players—senior midfielder Karen Tuesta (Clifton, NJ/Clifton) and freshmen forwards Cania Williams (Hillside, NJ/Hillside) and Jeanine Moseti (Jersey City, NJ/Snyder) each registered braces. Vargas had seven points on the day, upping her season goals mark to 12. Williams had six points (two goals, two assists).
 
Freshman midfielder Kathy Gutierrez (Jersey City, NJ/McNair Academic) had four assists—the first four points of her career. Gutierrez tied the single-game school record with four assists, set by Carine Carvalheiro on October 22, 2015 (at Lincoln).
 
Carbonaro and Vargas having individual hat tricks marks the fifth such time in school history the Knights have had two players finish with three or more goals in a game. Carbonaro scored the first goals of her two-year Gothic Knight career and even teamed with twin sister Gina Carbonaro (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) (two assists) to account for the eventual game-winning goal.
 
The 12-goal margin of victory tied for the second most lopsided win in NJCU women's soccer history, trailing only their 13-0 win over the Cougars four years ago. Finally, NJCU led 10-0 at halftime—one goal shy of matching the largest halftime margin (11-0) in the 2003 CCNY game.
 
NJCU scored three times in a span of 3:01 in the first 4:13 of the game, then added two goals in 45 seconds in the 17th minute and three goals in 1:52 to cement the lead. The final two goals of the game came within a span of 2:02 of each other.
 
The opening goal of the night was a memorable Nina Carbonaro (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) scored the first goal of her NJCU career, doing so just 72 seconds into the match. Despite having played over 2,500 minutes without a goal prior to that first NJCU career goal (2,503 minutes to be exact), Carbonaro waited just two minutes later for the second goal of her Gothic Knight career. This one was assisted by Gina Carbonaro (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex), giving the goal an even more special feel.
 
In the fifth and 17th minutes, it was, to no surprise, Vargas scored her 10th and 11th goals of the season. Both were assisted, the first by Gutierrez and the second by Gina Carbonaro (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex).
 
Just 45 seconds after Vargas' second goal, junior forward Rosa Bonilla (Roselle Park, NJ/Roselle Park) increased the Knight lead to 5-0, with her third goal of the season coming off a Vargas assist. After handing out the helper, Vargas put the finishing touches on her hat trick, scoring her 12th goal of the season in the 19th minute, assisted by Tuesta.
 
Tuesta got in on the goal-scoring fun herself not much later, tacking on a pair of goals in the 22nd and 26th minutes, the first assisted by Williams, while the second came courtesy of Gutierrez.
 
In the 32nd minute, Nina Carbonaro (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) became the second NJCU player to secure a hat trick in the first half, with a header from junior back Lesley Cano. The final goal of the first half came from Williams—the first of her collegiate career—and was once again assisted by Gutierrez to make it 10-0 at the break.
 
The first goal of the second half went to Medgar Evers, as sophomore defender Jody-Ann Blanchard (Jamaica, West Indies) scored the lone goal of the Cougars season to date, doing so in the 52nd minute. It was Medgar Evers only shot of the match. The Knights had 33 shots, 17 of which were on target. Freshman goalkeeper Ajene Christian (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had four saves on the night.
 
After allowing the Cougars on the board, NJCU came back with three more goals in the match. First, Williams got her second of the game, before Moseti scored a pair of late goals—the first two of her career—in the 62nd and 64th minutes; Gutierrez and Williams had the assists to make it 13-1 before the match was called in the 73rd minute.

 
OF NOTE:

• This was the first time the two sides had met since the 13-0 NJCU victory in 2014. The Gothic Knights now lead the all-time series 10-0-0 (73-9 goal differential).
• Vargas moved into fourth place in school history with 82 career points (36 goals, 10 assists), passing both Carine Carvalheiro (77 points, 2001, 2003-05) and Ashley Cunha (80 points, 2016-18).
• This was the third hat trick for Vargas this season and the sixth of her career.
• Eight NJCU players had at least two shots in the game. Nina Carbonaro (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) led all players with seven.
• NJCU snapped a six-game scoreless streak (451:12), all against New Jersey Athletic Conference foes.
• MEC scored its first goal scored since September 27, 2017 vs. New Rochelle.
