JERSEY CITY, N.J. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Fontbonne University (17-6)'s trip to the East Coast saw it prevail for the fourth time in five matches as the Griffins swept the
New Jersey City University men's volleyball team (7-14) in a holiday matchup on March 30 at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center (Coach Charlie Brown Court).
In a Good Friday match and the first-ever meeting between the programs, Fontbonne hit .329 as a team and powered 39 kills in a 3-0 (25-13, 25-21, 25-14) result.
Fontbonne, located in St. Louis, Missouri and members of the Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League, played the fifth match of a seven-match, five-day trip and were led by junior outside hitter
Brendon Schwartze (St. Louis, Mo.), who hit .600 with a match-best 10 kills in 15 swings (one errors), adding nine digs and three service aces. Freshman middle hitter
Braden Woolsey (Edwardsville, Ill.) hit .857 with six kills in seven attempts.
Also for the Griffins, sophomore setter
Kyler van Rossum-O'Connell (Joilet, Ill.) totaled 29 assists and five digs. Senior right side
Jose Farley (O'Fallon, Mo.) hit .462 with seven kills (7-1-13) and three blocks. Sophomore libero
Zach Rothstein (Evergreen Park, Ill.) finished with 11 digs and senior middle
James Sauermann (Edwardsville, Ill.) contributed four blocks.

Alcides Dos Reis (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) hit .273 with five kills. Sophomore setter
Jimmy Vega (Harrison, NJ/Harrison) and freshman
Alexander Umanzor (West New York, NJ/Memorial) each had nine assists.
Fontbonne had 13 kills in each set. It never trailed in game one when it hit .458 as a team (13-2-24) and had a 78 percent sideout rate (11-14).
NJCU's best set was the second when it hit .258 and had 13 kills; the Knights had just nine in the other two sets combined. NJCU had a 19-18 lead in game two before Fontbonne scored the next five points, including three combo blocks by
Farley and
Sauermann to claim a 23-19 lead. Fontbonne led wire-to-wire in game three to seal the win.
