#NJCUBB Improves to 3-0 for First Time in 16 Years With Doubleheader Sweep of Emerson

AUBURNDALE, Fla. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Multiple players had highlight days with the bat, glove and on the mound as the New Jersey City University baseball team improved to 3-0 for the first time since 2002 with a doubleheader sweep of Emerson College, 14-1 and 6-4, on day two of its spring trip in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational at the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex Main Field on March 5.

It would be hard to highlight everyone's day without this recap being 2,000 words. But on a team with a ton of potential to be one of the best to ever take the field in program history, several student-athletes had sensational performances. Junior shortstop Nick LoGatto (Helmetta, NJ/Spotswood) played some of the most incredible defense ever seen for the Gothic Knights, including soaring close to three feet off the ground to snag a line drive that resulted in a double play and multiple diving stops and throw outs in the left side hole. At the plate, LoGatto was a combined 5-for-6 with five runs scored.

Junior right-handed pitcher Anthony Carfora (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) became the first player on record in school history to win twice on the same day, earning both victories in relief.

Sophomore right fielder Juan Pena (Perth Amboy, NJ/Perth Amboy) was a combined 3-for-5 with four RBIs, three runs and a massive three-run homer in the third inning of game one that broke it wide open. Senior first baseman Dan Berardi (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) was 3-for-8 with three RBIs, and his back-to-back ground rule doubles with sophomore designated hitter Lenin Gomez (Edison, NJ/Edison) helped the Knights immediately answer Emerson's three-run rally in game two with three runs. Junior catcher Jan Castellano (Prospect Park, NJ/Paterson Eastside) was a combined 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs.

NJCU piled up extra-base hits in both games. In game one, eight of its 16 hits were for extra bases (five doubles, two triples, one homer) and 5-of-10 in game two picked up multiple bags (four doubles, one triple).

More to come.
