GLASSBORO, N.J. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Nationally No. 2/6 ranked Rowan University (27-7, 10-5 NJAC) scored eight runs in the third inning and three pitchers limited the New Jersey City University baseball team (18-16, 5-10 NJAC) to four hits as the Profs defeated NJCU, 14-0, in game one of a New Jersey Athletic Conference home-and-home series on April 26 at the Rowan Baseball Field.
 
The Profs, who spent time as the No. 1 ranked team in the country in the middle of the season, tallied 19 hits, including 15 singles and broke the game open when 12 batters came to the plate in the eight-run third inning. Rowan had just five hits that inning, but a bases-clearing three-run double by senior center fielder Kyle Golla (Palm Coast, Fla.) proved to be the biggest of the frame.
 
For Rowan, ranked No. 2 by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Collegiate Baseball and No. 6 by D3baseball.com/NCBWA, junior right-handed pitcher Danny Serreino (Jackson, N.J.) tossed the first 6.0 innings, striking out seven without a walk over 66 pitches to improve to 5-2. He allowed two hits.
 
Sophomore righty Jeremy Dyzenhaus (Morganville, N.J.) went 2.0 innings, allowing one hit (one strikeout) and senior righty Sam Nocito (Mount Laurel, N.J.) allowed one hit in the ninth inning.
 
Offensively, Golla was 4-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs and junior shortstop Dillon Mendel (Sparta, N.J.) batted 4-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs (one walk), reaching base five times.
 
Senior left fielder Monny Strickland (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) was 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Freshman right fielder Nick Schooley (Marlton, N.J.) hit 2-for-3 (1 RBI, 1 run). Junior first baseman Anthony Harrold (Woodbury, N.J.) scored twice and junior catcher Steven Hewa (Galloway, N.J.) walked twice (1-for-3).
 
Junior shortstop/third baseman Nick LoGatto (Helmetta, NJ/Spotswood) had one hit and swiped two bases to improve to 22-for-22 in steals this year. Junior second baseman Tom Pulcine (Hazlet, NJ/Raritan), sophomore left fielder Bill Feehan (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant Boro) and freshman pinch hitter John Miano (Ridgefield, NJ/Ridgefield) had the other three NJCU hits; Miano had his first collegiate hit.
 
NJCU used six pitchers in the game; junior righty Nate Facey (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick) suffered only his second loss of the season (3-2) in an opening role. Freshmen righties Jason Rivera (Clifton, NJ/Clifton) and Brandon Kuhl (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) and senior righty Dan Foley (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East) each threw a scoreless inning of relief.
 
Rowan led 1-0 after the second inning. Rowan added three runs in the bottom of the fourth for a 12-0 lead and tacked on a pair of runs in the seventh.
 
NOTABLES:

• NJCU remains one win shy of matching the single-season record of 19 victories accomplished three times—1986, 1995 and 2005.
• Junior catcher Jan Castellano (Prospect Park, NJ/Paterson Eastside) threw out his 15th base runner this season in 39 stolen base attempts (24-39).
• NJCU was shutout for the third time this season.

• Weather-permitting, the teams will conclude the home-and-home series on Friday, April 27 at 3:30 p.m. at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex. NJCU will celebrate Senior Day, honoring four-year seniors Dan Berardi (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex), Kyle Kafer (Bordentown, NJ/Bordentown) and Mike Ramirez (Old Bridge, NJ/Saint Joseph-Metuchen) and two-year senior Dan Foley (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East). Kafer, the chair of the NJAC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, has a year of eligibility remaining and may return in 2019 as a graduate student.
