New Jersey City University senior first baseman
Dan Berardi (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) has been named the
New Jersey Athletic Conference Player of the Week after using his bat and glove to help the Gothic Knights post a 4-1 record in five games last week. The award, for week seven of the 2018 season, was announced by the conference office on April 2.
Â
Berardi was named NJAC Player of the Week for the second time in his career, previously taking home the accolade in
week nine of the 2017 season (April 17, 2017). He is the first Gothic Knight baseball player to receive a weekly award so far this season.
Â
In a 4-1 week for NJCU,
Berardi, a 5-11, 215-pound right-handed hitter, paced the Gothic Knights with a 1.000 slugging percentage, .636 on-base percentage and .556 batting average. He batted 10-for-18 with 10 RBIs, seven runs and four extra-base hits—two doubles and two homers. He walked four times and was 3-for-3 in stolen bases while striking out just twice as NJCU's cleanup hitter.
Berardi hit safely in all five games and had RBIs in each. He had multiple hits in four of the games and multiple RBIs in three games.
Â
At first base, he made just one error in 49 chances (four assists) and saved multiple errors with his ability to dig out poor throws.
Â
Berardi, a Criminal Justice major, vaulted into fourth place in school history with 12 career homers and continues to climb the all-time leaders list in hits (130), RBIs (76) and doubles (32).
Â
BERARDI'S GAME-by-GAME GLIMPSE
- In a 7-3 win over Baruch on March 27, Berardi was the standout of the 11-hit attack. He homered twice, including a three-run shot to break a 1-1 tie in a four-run third inning. He later hit a solo homer in the fifth inning. He batted 3-for-3 with four RBIs, two runs scored and a walk.
- In an 8-4 win over Staten Island on March 28 that gave head coach Jerry Smith his 100th career victory, Berardi was 1-for-3 with one RBI and a run scored. NJCU plated three runs in the sixth inning to tie the game. Berardi had one of the biggest hits when he ripped a laser over the CSI third baseman and down the left field line for an RBI single.
- In a 10-5 win at Old Westbury on March 29, Berardi went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, two runs scored, a double, walk and steal.
- Berardi was a combined 4-for-8 with three RBIs in an NJAC opening weekend split with Kean on March 31. In a 7-5 win in game one, he batted 2-for-4 with two RBIs—a key two-out, two-run single that made it 7-4.
- He was 2-for-4 with two runs, one RBI, with a double, walk and steal in an 11-8 loss in 10 innings in the nightcap.
Â
BERARDI THIS SEASON
- Entering the week, Berardi is batting .414 (24-58) with 10 extra-base hits (seven doubles, one triple, two homers), 16 RBIs and 13 runs scored. His slugging percentage is an astronomical .672 and with five walks, his on-base percentage sits at .453. He also has five stolen bases. Defensively, he has just two errors in 125 chances for a .984 percentage.
- Berardi is putting up his best offensive numbers since his freshman season in 2014. That year he was also the NJAC Rookie of the Week in week six of the 2014 season before injuries curtailed his rookie campaign. He didn't play in 2015 before returning to the lineup as a sophomore in 2016.
- Berardi currently ranks second in the NJAC in slugging percentage, third in doubles, third in homers, fourth in RBIs and fifth in batting average while ranking in the Top 10 in seven categories and Top 25 in 11 statistics. Berardi currently ranks 45th in Division III in doubles per game (0.50), helping to lead an NJCU squad that is sixth in the nation in doubles at 2.79 per game.
