#NJCUWSoccer, Led by Historic Goals from Mallensy Vargas, Crush York 7-0

September 10, 2018

Box Score BROOKLYN, N.Y. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | New Jersey City University (2-2-0) scored early and often against York College (0-5-0), defeating the Cardinals by a final score of 7-0 on September 10. Junior forward Mallensy Vargas (North Bergen, NJ/Memorial) was the catalyst for the Gothic Knights, scoring three times in the first 25 minutes to move into third place in NJCU history with 34 career goals.

Vargas netted another hat trick, her second of 2018 and fifth of her career and 34 goals in 34 collegiate games and seven in four games this year. She has generated 75 career points.

Vargas was far from the only Knight to find the back of the net on Monday, however. Junior forward Rosa Bonilla (Roselle Park, NJ/Roselle Park), after missing the last two games to injury, scored a pair of goals, including one very late in the affair; sophomore midfielder Crystal Tepale (Passaic. NJ/Passaic County Tech) and sophomore forward Aracelli Carranza (North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) also added tallies to their record.

All four meetings with the Cardinals in the history of the series have been shutout wins for NJCU.

The third goal for Vargas was an especially impressive one in the historical sense, as it moved the junior past long-time assistant coach Katie Feehan for third all-time in goals scored for NJCU women's soccer. Feehan, who is the lone women's soccer player currently in the NJCU Athletics Hall of Fame, helped recruit Vargas three years ago, making the moment all that much cooler.

"I couldn't be happier for Mallensy," Feehan said. "It is well deserved and she has been working hard. To have players that you coach surpass you in the record books is an honor and Mallensy, along with Jen Albuja and Julia Caseres, have all made me very proud."

The Knights came out with a good intensity, according to their head coach, Anthony Tuesta. "The team played with a sense of urgency and kept playing at a high speed of play," Tuesta noted, while highlighting Bonilla's performance, in her scoring two goals off the bench. Because the Knights came out and staked themselves a large lead, the team was able to get lots of players on the field.

"The players that hadn't seen many minutes did not miss a beat," Tuesta said. "They were very composed and showed technical improvement as a team."

Tuesta made note of Dana Laloo, Mía Crimaldi, Jeanine Moseti (Jersey City, NJ/Snyder), Lesly Cano (Plainfield, NJ/Plainfield), Alexis Castaneda (Kearny, NJ/Kearny), Amy Soto (Cliffside Park, NJ/Cliffside Park), Mariana Amaro (Paterson, NJ/John F. Kennedy STEM), Anelysa Heredia (Trenton, NJ/Trenton Central), and Kathy Gutierrez (Jersey City, NJ/McNair Academic) who all playing important minutes.
