#GothicGameDay: #NJCUWSoccer Hosts Lehman in Second-Ever Meeting

September 17, 2018

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | The New Jersey City University women's soccer team (3-3-0) takes a brief break from New Jersey Athletic Conference play on Monday, September 17 to play host to Lehman College (2-0-1). The match will take place at 4:00 p.m. at the Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field. This will be the Knights' final non-conference match until October 22, when they face Medgar Evers in their penultimate game of the 2018 regular season.

The Gothic Knights were last on the pitch Saturday, when they fought hard but fell to Ramapo College (2-4-0) by a final score of 2-0. Despite the Knights having more of the possession, it was the Roadrunners who were able to create more legitimate attacks, outshooting NJCU 23-17, and 14-4 in terms of shots on goal. The Knights will try to turn their possession into more dangerous attacks against Lehman on Monday.

The two sides have met only once in their respective program histories, with Lehman coming out on top 4-0 in a 2015 matchup between the two at the Hudson Classic. The neutral-site match, played on September 6 in Riverdale, N.Y., saw Lehman score three goals in the first half and dominate play most of the day, outshooting NJCU 20-10. The game was the final of the Hudson Classic, hosted by Mount Saint Vincent.

This season, the Lightning have played only three matches, winning their most recent two outings, after drawing with NJCU's NJAC rival Rutgers-Newark in their 2018 season opener. Lehman have not played since Tuesday, September 11; the Knights played three matches last week.

In their three matches this season, the Lightning have scored five times, but it has been their defense that has really shined, with just two goals allowed. They have allowed no opponent more than one goal in 2018. Their goalkeeper, sophomore Rebecca Gritz (Bronx, N.Y.) has played every minute this season, as have two of their backline—freshman Micaela Canapa (New Rochelle, N.Y.) and junior Makeda Pyles (Suwanee, Ga.). Their attack is led by forward Daisy Gomez (Port Chester, N.Y.) who has two goals and an assist in 2018.

2018 NJCU Leaders:
  • Goals: Mallensy Vargas (North Bergen, NJ/Memorial) (8)
