Stockton University (13-4, 3-0 NJAC) came into Tuesday's New Jersey Athletic Conference matchup with
New Jersey City University (3-9, 0-4 NJAC) having won five consecutive matches, and they extended that streak to six with a straight set 3-0 decision (25-11, 25-9, 25-18) over the Gothic Knights at the Stockton Sports Center on September 25.
Â
The Ospreys hit .360 for the match, committing just seven combined attack errors in their three-set victory. On the flip side, NJCU hit -.086, only posting more kills than errors in their third and final set. It was that third set that was best of the night for NJCU, as they stuck with Stockton, opening the set with an ace from senior setter
Shaylah Ware (Newark, NJ/Science Park) and collecting four kills from junior opposite
Pamela Florimon (Teaneck, NJ/Memorial) in the game.
Â
It was an incredibly balanced approach from Stockton, as they used all 16 healthy players, over half of whom got kills on the evening. They were led in kills by sophomore middle hitter
Franceska Gustave (Edgewater, N.J.), who was the lone player, on either team, to reach double-digits in any statistical category outside of assists (a career-high 10 kills). She hit an impressive .667 on the night (10-0-15)Â Â Â .
Â
On the NJCU side of things,
Ware was the lone player, on either team, to reach double-digit assists, as she collected 15 assists. She combined that with six digs and two service aces, for an all-around strong performance.
Â
Other NJCU standouts on the night were senior outside hitter
Amber O'Donnell (East Newark, NJ/Harrison) leading the team with six kills, senior libero
Georgina Rayo (Jersey City, NJ/McNair Academic) leading both teams with nine digs and junior outside hitter
Stephanie Duque (West New York, NJ/Memorial), who had four kills to just one attacking error. The Knights themselves used 11 players.
Â
For the Ospreys, they saw their statistical dominance spread throughout the roster, but the second-best performance belonged to senior right side hitter
Allie Desmond (Ellicott City, Md.), who had six kills (just two errors), to go along with three blocks.
Â
The first two sets moved quickly, with Stockton using an 8-0 run in each set to distance themselves from NJCU. In the third set, the Knights kept Stockton from going on such an extended run, and they tallied a nice run of their own when they took six of eight points in the middle of the set, finishing with a respectable 18 points—their best effort of the night.
Â
OF NOTE:
- Series: 52nd meeting. Stockton leads 47-5 and has won the last 11 meetings since 2008.
- Stockton reached double figure kill totals in all three sets, topped by 12 in the third game, but their best hitting percentage came in the second, when they hit .450 for the game.
