JERSEY CITY, N.J. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | The
New Jersey City University women's basketball team (4-11) plays its final non-conference game of the season before finishing the regular season with nine straight New Jersey Athletic Conference games when NJCU hosts
Wesleyan University (8-6) on Coach Charlie Brown Court at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center on Monday, January 14. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
Â
This is only the second time in school history that a school from the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) has come to NJCU in any sport. The first was also a women's basketball team this season, when two-time reigning national champion
Amherst College came to the JMAC on December 2.

QUICK HITS:
- The Knights have lost two of their last three, but the one win was a historic victory. The Knights defeated Pratt Institute 110-33, with senior guard Marajiah Bacon (Neptune, NJ/Neptune) breaking Monique Hemingway's single-game school record (43 points) with 46 points. Bacon also became the first player in school history to record two triple-doubles in one season or ever, and her twin sister Miesha Bacon (Neptune, NJ/Neptune) was one steal away from a triple-double of her own. The team also recorded 39 steals, the fourth-most ever in a Division III women's basketball game.
- Marajiah Bacon (Neptune, NJ/Neptune) had her lowest scoring output of the season the last time the team took the court, however, as Rutgers University-Camden held Bacon to 14 points in a 79-60 loss for the Knights. NJCU did have a strong effort from freshman Teresa Ortiz (Newark, N.J./University), playing in just her second game of the season.
- The emergence of Teresa Ortiz (Newark, N.J./University), a true freshman and 2018 First-Team All-State Group I selection, who debuted against Pratt without ever practicing, will be a storyline to watch for NJCU in the second half. In her two games, Ortiz has averaged 13.5 points in just 17.5 minutes, hitting six of the 15 three-pointers she has attempted. With Miesha Bacon (Neptune, NJ/Neptune) having pushed her scoring average solidly into double figures after a slow start to the season, the Knights now have three legitimate scorers, taking some of the scoring onus off of Marajiah Bacon (Neptune, NJ/Neptune).
- The Cardinals are coming a road loss to now #5 Amherst over the weekend, one of two shared opponents this season for NJCU and Wesleyan. The Cardinals lost to Amherst, 62-44; the Knights lost by a score of 78-52. The other common opponent is FDU-Florham, whom Wesleyan defeated by seven at home, while the Knights lost by eight in their season-opening tournament matchup at FDU.
- The Cardinals are led by a pair of seniors: Olivia Gorman (Lower Gwynedd, PA), who averages 14.0 points per game, and Tara Berger (Purchase, N.Y.) who averages a double-double, at 10.4 points and 10.0 rebounds per game. Â
- Berger is 6' 1", and the Knights have struggled with strong post presences this season, having been outrebounded by an average of 10.1 rebounds per game. Look for the Cardinals to feed Berger early and often to see how NJCU handles the size.
Â
SERIES:
- This will be the first-ever meeting between these two sides.
