JERSEY CITY, N.J. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | The
New Jersey City University athletics department, in partnership with the Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee (MOIC) and the NCAA Division III National Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), will be participating this week in a national Diversity and Inclusion Week social media campaign from October 22-25.
The second annual Diversity and Inclusion Week will feature a daily theme and student-athletes and the NJCU community are encouraged to share content and their own personal experiences on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook using the hashtag #NCAAInclusion.
NJCU athletics invites its community to use its voice and join student-athletes, administrators, coaches and fans across the country who will utilize their platform to start the discussion on, speak out on, and promote diversity and inclusion as key elements of student-athlete success.
Here's what to expect this week on NJCU's athletic platforms:
- Day 1—Tuesday, October 22: "This is Who We Are"
- Goal of the Day: Highlighting student-athletes' core values and multiple identities. The focus is on student-athletes' core values and multiple identities. The purpose of this day is to show who the student-athlete is as a person. What core values do you believe in? What values guide your life?
- NJCU Theme—I Am: This video will introduce you to NJCU student-athlete leaders who discuss their core values with a consistent message of "I Am".
- Day 2—Wednesday, October 23: "Broadening Our Horizons"
- Goal of the Day: Creating connections across campus and highlighting diverse friendships, mentors, and role models. Day 2 is focused on the relationships that inspire student-athletes to be their best selves and broaden their horizons, particularly as they reflect diversity and inclusive excellence. This day of the campaign is all about stepping outside of one's comfort zone, creating connections across campuses/campus offices, and highlighting the value of diverse friendships, role models and mentorship.
- NJCU Theme—The Jeff Haddock Experience: Instagram and Snapchat takeover. Experience a day in the life of a student-athlete with NJCU men's basketball senior Jeff Haddock, Jr. Jeff is a scholar-athlete who, since transferring to NJCU from Rowan in 2018, is highly involved on campus as a member of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity and a member of the Student Government Association (SGA) as an athletic liaison.
- Day 3—Thursday, October 24: "Better Together"
- Goal of the Day: Showcasing the strengths and diversity of the campus community. Day 3 is focused on the campus and conference communities of which student-athletes are a part of. On this day of the campaign, participants will showcase the strengths of their campus, with a particular focus placed on how diversity and inclusion enrich these communities.
- NJCU Theme—I Cheer For. The NJCU men's and women's soccer team has student-athletes from all over the world. Eight student athletes will tell us who they cheer for. Together, they form a true multicultural soccer family, on and off the field.
- Day 4—Friday, October 25: "Taking Action"
- Goal of the Day: Outlining personal action steps for inclusive excellence. Day 4 is focused on taking action to promote diversity and inclusion on campus in the future. By developing and sharing personal commitments, this final day of the 2019 campaign asks student-athletes to identify specific action steps that will allow them to contribute to inclusive excellence during their time at their school.
- NJCU Theme—I Will. NJCU student-athlete leaders will describe their personal commitments to taking action to build upon the NCAA's Diversity and Inclusion campaign.
The goal of this campaign is to use the long-reaching influence of social media to create a dialogue on diversity and inclusion and to communicate the benefit of inclusive environments to the student-athlete experience. We invite you to participate using NJCU's three primary social media platforms.
