NEWARK, N.J. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | For the third time this year, the
New Jersey City University men's soccer team was tied in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match with less than 10 minutes to go, yet suffered a frustrating, regulation loss. This time it was Rutgers-Newark who broke the Gothic Knight hearts, scoring in the 84th minute and then holding on during a frantic final five-plus minutes for the 1-0 win.
While the match remained scoreless for over 80 minutes, it was the Scarlet Raiders (7-9-2, 3-4-2 NJAC) who controlled the majority of the play, outshooting the Knights (11-9-0, 0-9-0 NJAC) 21-5 for the game, with a 9-1 edge in shots on goal. The Raiders also had a 12-2 margin in corner kick attempts.
Regardless, thanks to another strong performance from junior goalkeeper
Aldahir Cazun (Jersey City, NJ/Dickinson) in goal for NJCU, the match reached the final 10 minutes with no difference on the scoreboard. He finished with eight saves.
However, with 6:28 on the clock, it was junior defender
Kevin Ocampo (Bound Brook, N.J.) scoring not just his first goal of the season, but the first in 46 career games for Newark.
Ocampo was picked out by sophomore midfielder
Joe Alba (Union City, N.J.) just inside the 18, and he found the right side of the net for the late lead.
The Knights, though, hustled the ball to the center of the pitch and turned up the heat as high as they could. The final five minutes consisted of waves of pressure from NJCU, along with counters from Newark. That led to an NJCU foul on Newark in the box, with senior back
Jose Monzon (Newark, N.J.) stepping up to the spot to take the penalty in the 89th minute.
Once again,
Cazun proved up to the moment, diving low to his left for the save, and keeping the Knights alive for a hectic final 77 seconds. NJCU sent all bodies forward, and it very nearly resulted in a goal, with senior midfielder
Koshane Marshall (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) getting a good look from point-blank range that junior keeper
Andres Medina (Howell, N.J.) was able to keep out with his only save of the day..
One final corner kick for NJCU couldn't result in a shot on goal, as the Knights wrapped up their NJAC season with one final heartbreaking loss.
OF NOTE:
- Series: 45th meeting. Newark leads the all-time series, 26-17-2.
- Opponents are just 1-for-6 on penalty kicks this season against Cazun in net and 2-for-7 overall.
UP NEXT:
- With the regular season complete, NJCU will now wait until Monday, November 11 to find out if its season will continue in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament.
