JERSEY CITY, N.J. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Rutgers-Newark scored three times in each half to knock off the
New Jersey City University women's soccer team, 6-0, in the final New Jersey Athletic Conference contest of the 2019 season played under a misting rain on October 30 at the Robert L McNulty Memorial Soccer Field.
Â
Rutgers-Newark finished one point out of the NJAC Tournament with the win and the result of other games on the final day of the league's action. The Scarlet Raiders improved to 11-7-2 (3-4-1 NJAC). The Gothic Knights dropped to 7-10-1 (0-8-1 NJAC). Newark outshot NJCU, 22-6.
Â
If NJCU does not make up its game with Yeshiva University that was rained out on October 27, the loss will end the 2019 season for the Knights.
Â
Five different players scored for Rutgers-Newark following a 17th minute own goal that proved to be the only one the Raiders would need.
Â
Sophomore midfielder
Breanna Costa (Kearny, N.J.) scored her first goal of the season in the 29th minute and freshman midfielder
Hope Davis (Sparta, N.J.) added another in the 42nd minute. Junior midfielder
Ana Silveira (Newark, N.J.) and sophomore
Jessica Moreno (Cliffside Park, N.J.) had first half assists.
Â
R-N had a 13-4 edge in shots in the second half. Freshman back
Tamia Howell (Union, N.J.) scored her third goal of the season in the 67th minute off an assist from senior forward
Shayna Bohus (Park Ridge, N.J.) before senior back
Deirdre Mackin (Dumont, N.J.) finished a penalty kick in the 71st minute. Senior
Samantha Richter (Dumont, N.J.) capped the scoring with an unassisted tally in the 78th minute.
Â
Sophomore goalkeeper
Cidney Lee-Sam (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) tallied eight saves for NJCU, including a perfect read to stop a penalty kick with 12:32 to go in the first half. Senior goalkeeper
Heidi Paulson (West Orange, N.J.) made three saves in 67:44 before junior
Jasmin Erichsen (Hoboken, N.J.) stopped one shot in the final 22:16).
Â
In a physical game, there were seven combined cards. NJCU received five of the cautions, including two double yellows to finish the game two players down. The Knights played the entire second half a player down after a 42nd minute red card came right before the third R-N goal.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- In the eighth minute, Newark had several opportunities right in front of the net after the ball skipped off the wet grass past Lee-Sam. Sophomore midfielder Laura Ford (Leonia, NJ/Leonia) ultimately slid inside the six to block the final attempt.
- Newark took a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute as a cross from the right endline was redirected into the goal by an NJCU center back attempting to clear it.
- R-N put a powerful shot on goal in the 22nd minute before the blast by sophomore forward Sabria Glasgow (East Brunswick, N.J.) was tipped up and over the crossbar by Lee-Sam.
- After an NJCU defensive clear was settled by Silveira, she played a perfect ball back to Costa wide open at the top of the box who hit a frozen rope over the outstretched arms of Lee-Sam and into the upper net.
- After a foul on the endline with 12:32 to go in the first half, senior back Ine Collins (Lumberton, N.J.) was awarded a penalty kick. Lee-Sam read it perfectly, took a lateral step towards the near right post, then laid out and blocked the attempt wide.
- Lee-Sam made a save on a line-drive save high in the 18 on Howell in the 41st minute.
- Junior center back Aracelli Carranza (North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) was issued her second yellow of the game early in the 42nd minute. On the ensuing free kick off the crossbar, the rebound could not be cleared far enough by the defense and Davis poked in the loose ball for a 3-0 lead—her second goal of the season.Â
- Newark added the three goals in the second half. NJCU received a second red card (after a double yellow) with 57 seconds left in the game.

OF NOTE:Â
