Box Score WAYNE, N.J. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | The
New Jersey City University women's volleyball team (5-11, 0-5 NJAC) dropped a New Jersey Athletic Conference match against William Paterson University (8-7, 1-3 NJAC) on October 8, falling 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-18).
Â
The Pioneers hit .326 as a club with 39 kills (39-10-86), served 11 aces and had a 52-34 differential in digs to control the match.
Â
In defeat, freshman outside hitter
Xarial Chandler (East Orange, NJ/University) led the way for NJCU with 11 kills on a .320 hitting percentage (11-3-25) and eight digs while senior middle blocker
Diana Trochimowicz (Linden, NJ/Linden) hit .500 with six kills. Freshman setter
Katrina Nguyendon (Union, NJ/Union) finished with 23 assists and freshman libero
Bella Sunahara (Parker, CO/Legend) was the lone Knight in double-digit digs (10). Sophomore middle
Leah Seickendick (Hoboken, NJ/Hudson Catholic) had three blocks.
Â
For the Pioneers, senior middle
Alyson Toman (Secaucus, N.J.) led the way with 13 kills and a stellar .462 attack percentage (13-1-26). Sophomore middle
Jamie O'Shea (Rockaway, N.J.) hit .462 with seven kills (7-1-13). Sophomore setter
Kristin Volavka (Milford, Pa.) delivered 32 assists, nine digs and three aces. Also for WP, freshman outside hitter
Kathleen Burrough (North Burlington, N.J.) and senior libero
Barbara Colizza (Hawthorne, N.J.) tallied double-digit digs, with 13 and 12, respectively;
Burrough also had seven kills and three aces.
Â
In the first, NJCU led early thanks to a pair of kills from
Trochimowicz and an ace from
Chandler. The Pioneers made their move shortly thereafter, however, building their advantage out to double digits before closing the set, 25-17. They did it with a strong defensive effort and by limiting their mistakes.
Â
In the second, it was the Pioneers who started well, while the Knights made their push mid-set, taking a 10-9 lead before a 12-2 run from Paterson set them up to take the set, 25-15. On the night, NJCU had more attacks than the Pioneers, but Paterson converted their attacks at a much higher rate, also avoiding errors both in attack and in service at a much better clip.
Â
The final set was the Knights' strongest, with their highest number of kills, as well as their best hitting percentage and most service aces. All that, however, was not enough to topple the Pioneers who jumped out to leads of 8-3 and 16-8 en route to a 25-18 final set victory, for the sweep.
Â
 Â
OF NOTE:
- Series: 54th meeting. Paterson extended their series winning streak to 11, now leading 42-12.
Â

- NJCU goes back out of conference to face off with Rosemont (3-15) in Rosemont, Pa. on Thursday, October 10 at 7:00 p.m.
