PITMAN, N.J. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | For the second week in a row and the third time this season, a
New Jersey City University women's volleyball freshman has been named the
New Jersey Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week. Freshman right side/outside hitter
Xarial Chandler (East Orange, NJ/University) has become the third different NJCU rookie to collect the award this year, the league office announced on November 4.
Chandler takes home the award for week 10 of the 2019 season. Last week, freshman libero
Bella Sunahara (Parker, CO/Legend) won the award for week nine and setter
Katrina Nguyendon (Union, NJ/Union) was NJAC Rookie of the Week in week one (September 3). The achievement marks the first time in the history of NJCU women's volleyball that three different players have received an NJAC weekly honor in the same season.
Chandler, a three-time NJCU Women's Athlete of the Week put an exclamation mark on the end of her first collegiate season as NJCU went 1-1 to conclude in its final two matches of 2019. In six sets, she produced 25.0 points, 25 digs, 20 kills and five service aces hitting .159 on attack (20-10-63). She averaged 4.17 points, 4.17 digs, 3.33 kills and 0.83 aces per set.
She reached double digits in digs for the ninth and 10th time this year and had her fifth consecutive match with 10+ kills.
In a 3-0 loss at Rutgers-Camden on October 29, NJCU received a match-high 11 kills from
Chandler who reached double digits in kills for the fifth consecutive match. She added 12 digs for her fourth career double-double with three aces.
In a season-ending 3-0 win at Clarks Summit on October 30,
Chandler tallied nine kills, 13 digs and two aces, hitting .226 (9-2-31). She was also a perfect 29-for-29 on serve reception.
On the season in 25 matches and 85 sets, she produced 255.5 points, 240 digs, 196 kills, 50 service aces and 16.0 blocks while hitting .102. She averaged 3.01 points, 2.82 digs, 2.31 kills, 0.59 aces and 0.19 blocks per set on the season.
