JERSEY CITY, N.J. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | What a way to wrap up 2019.
New Jersey City University athletics has accomplished a national feat never seen before in school history—an
Associated Press Top 10 Play of the Year.
On October 9, NJCU men's soccer junior goalkeeper
Aldahir Cazun (Jersey City, NJ/Dickinson) made national news when he did the unthinkable—scoring a goal on a punt in the Gothic Knights' 3-0 win over Purchase College.
It is almost unheard of for a goalkeeper to score a goal on a punt at any level—youth, high school, college or professional. The play was so unique, the
Associated Press announced on December 23 it has selected
Cazun's goal as one of its 10 national plays of the year.
Of the Top 10 plays, only three came from college sports and NJCU was the lone non-Division I highlight selected. The other nine highlights came from NCAA Division I football and Division I women's soccer, the National Football League, Major League Baseball, National Hockey League, the Women's World Cup and three from the National Basketball Association.
All 10 plays were published by the AP in news outlets across the nation in an article entitled "
Plays of the Year: 2019 Had a Flair for the Dramatic" by Tim Reynolds.

The highlight from NJCU #GothicVision, which was featured nationally on October 10 on ESPN's
SportsCenter during its two SC@Night editions, came with 19:17 left in the second half.
Cazun, moments after making a diving save, got to his feet in the 71st minute, walked to the top of his own 18 and unleashed a booming, line-drive punt that cleared the length of the field and took one high bounce, catching Purchase rookie keeper
Mario Olmedo off guard, as it caromed over his head and into the goal for a 3-0 lead. It was the first instance of an NJCU goalkeeper, male or female, ever scoring a goal. The highlight was one of three NJCU men's soccer plays that appeared on ESPN this fall. |
