Massive First Half Run Pushes Rowan Past #NJCUWBB

GLASSBORO, N.J. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Rowan (6-1, 3-0 NJAC) played host to New Jersey City University (1-5, 0-3 NJAC) at Esby Gymnasium on Saturday, December 7 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference matchup. The Gothic Knights of NJCU and the Profs of Rowan University were tied at 11-11 in the first quarter before the home team Profs went on an extended 40-9 run to finish off the first half, en route to an 83-47 victory in each team's third conference game of the season.

The Profs had five players in double figures and seven with as many as eight points in a hectic and fast-paced game which saw Rowan take a wild 80 shots from the field and another 26 from the line. The two teams combined for 60 turnovers, with Rowan taking particular advantage of the NJCU mistakes, on the way to 35 points off turnovers for the game.

No Gothic Knight scored in double figures, with the team as a whole shooting 26.9 percent from the field. Alexandria Sams (Burlington City, NJ/Pennsauken) had the most well-rounded game, with eight points, five rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Dayjah Anderson (East Orange, NJ/Newark Tech) also chipped in eight points, three assists, two rebounds, two steals, and two blocks.

Fifteen players saw the court for NJCU, and 11 different players scored. Ayanna Lewis (Willingboro, NJ/Burlington County institute of Technology) joined Anderson and Sams in leading NJCU with eight points, and her six rebounds also tied for the team lead.

For Rowan, freshman guard Nicole Mallard (Washington, N.J.) led the way with a 13-point, 13-rebound double-double (with seven steals), while Grace Marshall (Bellmawr, N.J.) and Savanna Holt (Upper Twp., N.J.) each chipped in a dozen — Holt doing her damage off the bench.

The Profs got things going early in the first, scoring right off the bat on a Gothic Knight turnover. However, the NJCU pace also played to their advantage, as an 8-0 NJCU run, sparked by a pair of Rowan turnovers, gave NJCU an 8-5 lead — their biggest lead of the game, as it narrowly preceded the large run from Rowan that stretched all the way to the halftime break.

The Profs held a 51-20 edge at the break and were able to keep the Knights at arm's length in the second half, never letting their lead get lower than 20 (two different occasions in the third).

NOTABLES:
  • Series: 61st meeting. Rowan leads 49-12 and has now won the last nine meetings.

UP NEXT:
  • The Knights head out of the NJAC briefly to host CCNY (0-8) on Monday, December 9 at 7:00 on Coach Charlie Brown Court at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center.
