NJCU Men’s Basketball to Participate in 28th Annual Harry James Summer League

May 28, 2019

UNION, N.J. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | The two-time defending champion New Jersey City University men's basketball team will participate in the annual Harry James College Summer League, beginning May 28 and running for a month on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. The league enters its 28th season in 2019.

NJCU retired Hall-of-Fame coach Charlie Brown oversees the eight-team league, which will feature seven regular-season games, contested on Tuesday and Thursday nights through June 18. The quarterfinal round is Thursday, June 20, with the semifinals and championship rounds being contested on June 25 and June 27. All games this year will be played at Kean's Harwood Arena in Union, N.J., rather than NJCU's John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center.

The league includes NJCU, Kean University, and Montclair State University from the New Jersey Athletic Conference, Stevens Institute of Technology and the College of Saint Elizabeth, along with Essex County College, the County College of Morris and Union County College.

The annual summer league is the first chance annually for returning veteran players to take the court with Gothic Knight newcomers. NJCU has won back-to-back summer league titles, going undefeated in 2017 and 2018. NJCU knocked off Stevens in last year's final.

The league, formerly known as the George Ballard Summer League and the Ballard/Stallworth College Summer League, was renamed in 2011 in honor of Harry James, the former East Orange Campus High School athletic director and Montclair State University athletic Hall of Famer, who passed away on December 4, 2010. James assisted Brown in organizing the summer league for many years prior to his death.

NJCU junior Sam Toney (Plainfield, NJ/Williamstown), a 2019 First-Team NABC All-American and the two-time NJAC Player of the Year will be among those players suiting up for the Knights this summer.
