#NJCUMSoccer Improves to 6-0-0; Knights Breeze By Pratt, 9-1

RANDALL'S ISLAND, N.Y. (NJCUGothicKnights.com| The New Jersey City University men's soccer team remained perfect six games into the season, breezing by Pratt Institute, 9-1, in non-conference action on September 11. Leading 2-0 at halftime, the Gothic Knights improved to 6-0-0 on the season by unleashing seven goals in the final 45 minutes for their most lopsided win of the season. It was the first meeting between the schools in 51 years.

Eight different Gothic Knights scored, led by senior midfielder Joe Burgos (Hackensack, NJ/St. Benedict's Prep), the NCAA Division III National Player of the Week, who collected four more points on two goals, giving him 16 points in six games—six goals and four assists.

Senior midfielder Edgar Crespo (Newark, NJ/Science Park), who netted his first career goal on September 6 against Yeshiva, improved upon that performance with a four-point effort, producing a goal and two assists.

Junior midfielder Luis Laing (Jersey City, NJ/Dickinson), sophomore midfielder Samuel Ansah (East Orange, NJ/Newark Tech), sophomore forward Edric De Paula (Blairstown, NJ/Newark Tech) and freshman forward Jean Posados (North Bergen, NJ/Brentwood (N.Y.)) each had one goal and one assist. Ansah and Posados both tallied their first collegiate goals.

Also scoring for NJCU were junior forward Rob Khela (Cairo, Egypt/Alabasia; Alexandria, Egypt) and freshman forward Stoichkov Joseph (Irvington, NJ/Irvington). Khela was credited with his first career game-winning goal, scoring late in the 35th minute to make it 2-0, seconds after Laing tallied the first goal of the game.

Single assists came from senior midfielder Koshane Marshall (Montclair, NJ/Montclair), sophomore midfielder Kevin Nunez (Ridgefield, NJ/Ridgefield Memorial) and freshman midfielder Jonathan Sandoval (Jersey City, NJ/Dickinson)

In all, 25 players saw action for NJCU and 13 had at least one shot. The Knights outshot Pratt, 34-2, and owned a 22-2 differential in shots on goal. Burgos (five shots, four on goal) and Ansah (five shots, two on goal) combined for 10 shots.

Despite three of its four first-team defensive players sitting out, NJCU's defense still smothered the Cannoneers and made for a quiet day for its two goalkeepers. Junior Aldahir Cazun (Jersey City, NJ/Dickinson) played the first 45 minutes without facing a shot. Senior Danny Montehermoso (Union City, NJ/Union City) had one save. Pratt scored a 57th minute penalty kick to spoil the shutout.

After NJCU scored twice in 30 seconds for the 2-0 halftime lead, NJCU quickly doubled that lead when De Paula (fourth goal of the season) and Burgos buried shots in the 52nd and 53rd minute. It sparked the floodgates for the Gothic Knights, scoring five times in under seven minutes and six times in a span of 10:45. Burgos completed his brace in the 55th minute before Ansah (56th minute) made it 6-0. After Pratt took advantage of a PK, Joseph (58th minute) and Posados (62nd minute) extended the margin to 8-1. Crespo teamed up with Laing for the final goal in the 77th minute.

Senior midfielder Juan Gomez (Miami, Fla.) scored the penalty kick for the Cannoneers. Pratt sophomore keeper Carter Boliek (Fayetteville, N.C.) made 13 saves.

OF NOTE:
  • Series: Tied, 1-1. First meeting since November 20, 1968 in the District 31 NAIA Tournament in Brooklyn, N.Y. Pratt won that postseason game, 7-2.

UP NEXT:
