JERSEY CITY, N.J. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | The
New Jersey City University women's volleyball team jumped out to a huge lead in game one, used a 12-0 outburst in set two and held off a late challenge in game three to sweep the City College of New York, 3-0 (25-13, 25-16, 26-24) in non-conference action on September 12 at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center (Coach Charlie Brown Court).

NJCU improved to 4-2 overall, sweeping an opponent for the second time this year. CCNY dropped to 0-3. NJCU hit .284 as a team with 29 kills versus only eight attack errors (74 attempts), unleashed 11 service aces and committed just seven service errors. Three Gothic Knights reached double figures in digs.

Sophomore outside hitter
Lola Vega hit .375 with seven kills (7-1-16) and two blocks while freshman
Katrina Nguyendon (Union, NJ/Union) registered her fourth double-double of the season with 24 assists and 12 digs.

Freshman
Xarial Chandler (East Orange, NJ/University) finished with seven kills (7-3-19, .211), four aces and 11 digs and senior outside
Stephanie Duque (West New York, NJ/Memorial) supplied 10 digs and seven kills (.250, 7-2-20). Also contributing were freshman libero
Bella Sunahara (Parker, CO/Legend) with eight digs and two aces and sophomore defensive specialist
Madeline Lopez (Elizabeth, NJ/Hudson Catholic) with four aces. Sophomore middle blocker
Leah Seickendick (Hoboken, NJ/Hudson Catholic) hit .429 with four kills (4-1-7) and two blocks.

CCNY's top player was senior outside
Nicole Polanco (West Haverstraw, N.Y.) with 11 kills and seven digs. Junior setter
Dzeneta Harambasic (RIdgewood, N.Y.) collected 23 assists. Sophomore libero
Onah Han (Bronx, N.Y.) supplied 11 digs while sophomore outside
Nadia Campoverde added 10 digs.

NJCU was dominant on attack in the first two sets, hitting .350 in the opener (9-2-20) and even better in game two at .368 (9-2-19). NJCU finished the match with 11 kills in game three to match the Beavers, but with far better efficiency.

In the opening set, NJCU turned a 6-3 lead into a 13-3 differential behind the serving of
Lopez who floored all four of her aces during the stretch. The lead swelled to 17-5 before NJCU pulled away.

The Knights found themselves behind 14-12 in game two before uncorking a decisive 12-0 run behind the serving of
Chandler to vault the lead to 24-14 and win easily.

The end of the third set was more dramatic as CCNY rallied to tie it at 23-23 and gained a momentary set point before a service error sent the game into extra points at 24-24. NJCU capitalized on its grit, winning a long rally that included
Nguyendon crashing into the scorer's table to save possession and
Vega flooring a kill. On match point,
Vega again connected for a winner to seal the 26-24 win.

UP NEXT:
NJCU heads to Bronxville, N.Y. on September 14 for its first road tri-match of the season. It meets Pratt Institute at 1 p.m. before a 3 p.m. match with host Sarah Lawrence.
