Mallensy’s Fifth Consecutive Brace Leads #NJCUWSoccer to its Fifth Straight Win; Knights Edge Lehman, 2-1

September 15, 2019

Box Score BRONX, N.Y. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Senior center midfielder Mallensy Vargas (North Bergen, NJ/Memorial) capped off one of the great individual weeks in NCAA Division III women's soccer history, scoring both New Jersey City University goals as the Gothic Knights built a 2-0 lead and defeated Lehman College, 2-1, in non-conference action on September 15 at Lehman's South Field.

Vargas contributed her fifth consecutive brace and NJCU improved to 5-2 on the season—matching its win total from 2018 just seven games into the season. NJCU had a shutout intact until the Lightning (0-7) scored on a free kick with just 34 seconds remaining in regulation.

For the third consecutive game, Vargas was involved in every NJCU goal. She had either scored or assisted the last 13 consecutive NJCU goals and of the 18 goals NJCU scored in four games this week, Vargas contributed to 17 of them, notching an unthinkable 29 points in four games this week alone—12 goals and five assists.

The 29 points in the last four games is second most in a four-game span in NJCU history; future Hall-of-Famer Jennifer Albuja net 34 points (16 goals, 2 assists) over four straight hat tricks from September 6-16, 2008.

However, while further research will need to be conducted, Vargas' 29 points this week are believed to be the most points in the same calendar week in NCAA history.

Vargas scored both goals in unassisted fashion, giving, her 14 goals and 33 points this season. NJCU outshot Lehman 9-2 in the first half but only led 1-0 at the break and it took a highlight-reel goal from Vargas to make it happen. Just 19:09 into the game she stepped to the endline and curled a corner kick into the goal untouched—a Goal Olimpico—to stun the Lightning and seize a 1-0 lead.

Lehman had the 8-5 edge in shots in the second half but Vargas got NJCU a needed insurance tally midway through the 63rd minute when she beat two defenders and then Lightning junior keeper Rebecca Gritz (Bronx, N.Y.) in a one-on-one, slipping a shot into the lower left corner for the 2-0 advantage. Gritz made five saves for Lehman.

Sophomore back Micaela Canapa (New Rochelle, N.Y.) spoiled the clean sheet when she scored at the 89:26 mark on a free kick just outside the 18..

Sophomore keeper Cidney Lee-Sam (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) played the first 75:59 for NJCU, stopping three shots without allowing a goal. Junior Kayla Breaud (Eatontown, NJ/Monmouth Regional) played the final 14:01 and stopped one shot, allowing the late free kick.

OF NOTE:
  • Series: NJCU leads all-time, 2-1, winning in each of the last two seasons by a one-goal margin.

  • Vargas notched her 14th career brace in the win.
