#NJCUWVB Falls in NJAC Opener at Ramapo

MAHWAH, N.J. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Ramapo College reached double figures in kills in all three sets to upend the New Jersey City University women's volleyball team, 3-0 (25-12, 25-14, 25-21) on September 17 at the Bill Bradley Center. The match was the 2019 New Jersey Athletic Conference opener for both clubs.

Ramapo (4-0, 1-0 NJAC) remained unbeaten and despite not being overly accurate on attack, it held a 37-18 differential in kills and had as many attack errors as NJCU had total kills. The Gothic Knights (4-5, 0-1 NJAC) dropped their third consecutive match after a 4-2 start to the season.

Eight different Roadrunners collected a kill, led by junior outside hitter Hannah Frascella (Hawthorne, N.J.) with 10 kills and a .304 attack percentage (10-3-23). Senior libero Karina Almeda (Mahwah, N.J.) defended 25 digs and landed four aces. Three other players had six kills apiece. Senior setter Kate Shirkey (Roxbury, N.J.) and junior setter Sara Correa (Edison, N.J.) combined for 32 assists and 15 digs.

Senior outside Stephanie Duque (West New York, NJ/Memorial) was NJCU's top offensive performer with eight kills (8-3-27, .185) while adding 11 digs. Freshman libero Bella Sunahara (Parker, CO/Legend) defended 13 digs and freshman setter Katrina Nguyendon (Union, NJ/Union) handed out 16 assists and eight digs.

Ramapo broke open an 8-6 opening set with a 9-1 run to seize a 17-7 advantage. In the second set, RCNJ collected six consecutive points to separate itself from NJCU after the clubs were knotted, 5-5, and eventually extended the run to 10-5 to claim a 15-7 cushion.

NJCU jumped out to leads of 5-2 and 8-3 in the third set and continued to own a 15-10 margin midway through the set. But it wouldn't hold. RCNJ scored five in a row to tie it, 15-15, and ultimately reeled off a 9-1 run to claim a 19-16 differential. NJCU stayed within one (21-20) before Frascella and freshman outside Stephanie Ross (Hackensack, N.J.) each landed a pair of kills in the final four points to seal the win.
