JERSEY CITY, N.J. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) |
New Jersey City University senior center midfielder
Mallensy Vargas (North Bergen, NJ/Memorial), the
NCAA Division III Women's Soccer National Player of the Week, scored in the eighth minute and contributed two assists while freshman forward
Arame Diouf (Weehawken, NJ/Memorial) netted a brace as the Gothic Knights notched their sixth consecutive victory, blanking Purchase College, 4-0, on September 18 at the Robert L McNulty Memorial Soccer Field.
With the win, NJCU improved to 6-2-0 on the season while handing Purchase its first loss (3-1-0). The Panthers, members of the Skyline Conference, had outscored its opponents 19-1 in the first three games this season before NJCU dominated the action, outshooting Purchase, 30-9.
The six-game winning streak is the longest for the Knights since they opened the 2011 season with a school-record 9-0-0 record—which also was the last time NJCU had a record of 6-2 or better to open a season.
Junior midfielder
Crystal Tepale (Passaic. NJ/Passaic County Tech) also scored—her first strike of the season—while sophomore goalkeeper
Cidney Lee-Sam (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) made six saves to preserve NJCU's second shutout of the season, in front of a defense that included junior backs
Aracelli Carranza (North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen), Tiffany Depaiva (Union, NJ/Union) and
Genesis Torres (Colonia, NJ/Colonia) and senior
Chelsea Uribe (East Newark, NJ/Harrison).
Vargas, the NCAA Division III national leader in goals, goals per game, points and points per game, scored her fourth game-winning goal of the season at the 7:47 mark of the first half—assisted by sophomore
Laura Ford (Leonia, NJ/Leonia)—then assisted on a strike by
Tepale in the 34th minute. Just 1:26 later
Diouf scored the first of her two tallies, also assisted by
Vargas, to make it 3-0 at halftime.
Vargas upped her season totals to 15 goals, seven assists and 37 points.
By contributing to the first three goals of the game,
Vargas extended her incredible streak of scoring or assisting to 16 consecutive goals over a four-game span. That streak ended when
Diouf scored unassisted in the 64th minute, winning a loose ball and slotting a shot through the opposing keeper's hands.
Diouf netted her third brace of the season and now ranks second on the team in goals (7) and points (15).
Senior keeper
Amber Yarter (Albany, N.Y.) made 12 saves in a busy afternoon for Purchase.
