Seven-Game Unbeaten Streak Ends as Second-Half Fury Lists William Paterson Past #NJCUWSoccer

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (NJCUGothicKnights.com| William Paterson University scored four times in the second half to break up a scoreless game, including a pair of headers off corner kicks to defeat the New Jersey City University women's soccer team, 4-0, in New Jersey Athletic Conference on September 28 at the Robert L McNulty Memorial Soccer Field.

Four different players tallied goals for William Paterson, which improved to 5-2-2 overall and 1-1-1 in the NJAC while snapping the Gothic Knights unbeaten streak at seven games (6-0-1 during the stretch). NJCU fell to 6-3-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the league.

WP outshot NJCU, 24-10, putting half of its shots on goal. The Pioneers were whistled for 13 offside in the contest. WP had a 15-6 differential in shots in the second half.

WP junior midfielder Danielle Dachowski (Succasunna, N.J.) had a goal and an assist, including the go-ahead goal and eventual winner in the 49th minute while senior back Ashley Cozzi (Middletown, N.J.) assisted on both corner kick strikes.

Senior midfielder Lorraine Moffitt (Paramus, N.J.) added a penalty kick in the 53rd minute to provide separation. Leading 2-0, WP iced the game with two goals in 90 seconds in the final 10 minutes of regulation, with senior forward Marisa Adelman (Branchburg, N.J.) and senior midfielder Kristen Bowe (Rockaway, N.J.) each finishing shots.

Adelman had a game-high nine shots for William Paterson, including five on goal. NJCU senior center midfielder Mallensy Vargas (North Bergen, NJ/Memorial), the NCAA national scoring leader in goals and points, was held scoreless for only the second time in nine games this year, finishing with three shots. Sophomore midfielder/back Laura Ford (Leonia, NJ/Leonia) had three shots (two on goal).

Junior goalkeeper Erica Hickey (Port Jefferson Station, N.J.) made four saves to preserve the Pioneers' third shutout of the season. NJCU sophomore Cidney Lee-Sam (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) made four first-half stops and finished with seven total saves in 71:44 of action before being forced out of the game with an injury sustained while aggressively breaking up a play well outside the 18. Sophomore Cindy Espinal (Clifton, NJ/Clifton) made one save over the final 18:16 of relief in her first action of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • NJCU had its first notable opportunity in the 11th minute. Vargas sidestepped several defenders in the middle of the field, crossed the ball to the left flank to Ford, who curled a shot off the crossbar. The rebound by junior forward Jasmine Bass (Middletown, NY/Middletown) was pushed wide.
  • In the 13th minute, Cozzi beat a defender on the left wing, dribbled to net and had her shot on the left post grabbed by Lee Sam.
  • In the 24th minute, junior forward Daniella LoBue (Clifton, N.J.) had a breakaway on the left sideline. Lee-Sam came out to eliminate the angle and while LoBue sidestepped her along the left endling, her shot was into the outside netting.
  • In the 26th minute, senior mid Kristen Bowe had a chance on the left wing before her close-range shot was snatched with two hands by Lee-Sam, straddling the left post.
  • Lee-Sam made the highlight save of the game on a breakaway in the 47th minute. Adelman split two defenders and had a breakaway up the middle of the box before Lee-Sam came out and used a left-hand to push the shot away.
  • But two minutes later, WP got on the board as Cozzi's corner from the left endline inside the six was headed by Dachowski into the right side for her second tally of the season.
  • In the 50th minute Adelman missed just wide again on the near left endling wide of the right post.
  • WP got insurance in the 53rd minute. After a foul in the box, Moffitt was awarded a penalty kick which she drilled into the upper right corner for her first goal of the season.
  • In the 61st minute, Adelman had a point-blank attempt from eight yards after a perfect thru ball smothered by Lee-Sam.
  • A minute later, Vargas beat a defender on the far post but had her close-range shot blocked into the side netting.
  • WP hit the crossbar in the final seconds of the 67th minute as senior forward Corrine Bowe (Rockaway, N.J.) caromed a shot off the crossbar.
  • On a quick restart after a foul in the middle of the field in the 81st minute, Dachowski lobbed a long pass over the NJCU backline to Adelman, who dribbled in uncontested, sidestepped the new keeper, Espinal, before finishing it right.
  • 90 seconds later, Kristen Bowe scored her fourth goal of the season midway through the 83rd minute, heading in another corner kick by Cozzi from the left endline.
