JERSEY CITY, N.J. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | The new
NJCU eSports program has made a smashing debut. In its first official eSports competition held on September 28, the program won twice in
ECAC eSports Super Smash Bros. Ultimate competition, defeating one of the world's top-ranked opposing players in the process.
NJCU's Super Smash Bros. roster consists of eight players, divided into two teams of four: the 'NJCU Knights' and the 'NJCU Gothics'. Both have captains that have achieved success before coming to NJCU—Hydra for the Knights and Ziglet for the Gothics.
Each picked up opening-day victories. The 'NJCU Knights' roster of Hydra (Navin Gandharry), SuperSonic (Cameron Mitchell), DrillMiggy (Miguel Miranda) and Omnes Meus (Christian Binoya) took down Illinois Wesleyan University, 2-0. The 'NJCU Gothics' roster of Ziglet (Zilibo Seney), Nick (Nick Camejo), Monado0 (Chima Ogbo) and LoTUS (Bryce McCreary) also defeated Saint Francis University (Pa.) Red, 2-0.
Notably, Hydra (Navin Gandharry) defeated Illinois Wesleyan player Atata — a top 5 Ness character player in the world and the No. 127 ranked Super Smash Bros. player in North America. Video of the Hydra vs. Atata match can be
seen here.
On September 30, NJCU eSports played single matches in two other ECAC eSports games — Rocket League and Overwatch. The Overwatch team defeated the University of Albany, 3-0. Bryant University took a 3-0 win over NJCU's Rocket League squad in its debut.
NJCU eSports will continue to compete in ECAC eSports for six consecutive weeks through early November. [
