Box Score JERSEY CITY, N.J. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Rutgers-Newark shot 55.6 percent in the first half to grab an eight point lead and played consistently in the second half on the way to a 69-57 victory over the New Jersey City University men's basketball in New Jersey Athletic Conference action on February 1 at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center (Coach Charlie Brown Court).
On Alumni Day 2020, NJCU was swept in a season series by Rutgers-Newark for the first time since the 2014-15 season and it will hurt NJCU's positioning for the NJAC Tournament as the Gothic Knights fall a game behind Rutgers-Newark and Ramapo in the NJAC standing. The Knights now sit in fifth place, tied with Montclair State, its next opponent on February 5. Rutgers-Newark improves to 12-8 (8-5 NJAC) while NJCU's four-game winning streak ends. The Knights are 10-10 (7-6 NJAC).
Two-time NJAC Player of the Year and two-time All-American senior power forward Sam Toney (Plainfield, NJ/Williamstown), the NJAC Player of the Week, was the only Gothic Knight to score in double figures, finishing with 12 points on just seven shots.
