NJCU Men’s Wrestling Introduces First-Ever Program Transfers Ahead of 2020-21 Campaign

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | New Jersey City University men's wrestling head coach Harry Turner has announced his first-ever wave of transfers who will compete on the Gothic Knights inaugural roster during the 2020-21 season.
 
Matt Armamento (Kenilworth, N.J./Roselle Park), Jon Mejia (Roselle Park, N.J./Roselle Park), Brian Sidle (Maywood, N.J./Saint Joseph Regional-Montvale), Lance Wissing (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) and Elijah Varona (Homestead, Fla./South Dade) are the first five transfers in the history of the program.
 
"I'm beyond thrilled to have these first five join us ahead of our opening campaign," said Turner. "This group buying into our vision now will pay big dividends when we get to assimilate the next group of Knights. I'm excited to see the culture the staff envisioned take shape so quickly under this group of leaders."
 
Matt Armamento | Projected: 141 or 149 lbs.

  • Transfer from national powerhouse Johnson and Wales (R.I.). Will be a sophomore in 2020-21.
  • Armamento earned 13 wins as a true freshman during the 2018-19 season at JWU.
  • At Roselle Park High School, was a two-time NJSIAA state qualifier.
  • Won 103 matches in high school, 40 of which came during a stellar senior campaign highlighted by Union County, District 15, and Region 4 titles and was named First Team All-Conference.
  • Major: Criminal Justice

 
Jon Mejia | Projected: 133 lbs.

  • Transfer from Roger Williams University. Will be a sophomore in 2020-21.
  • Won 12 matches at Roger Williams as a true freshman in 2018-19.
  • At Roselle Park High School, he earned 112 career victories as well as Union County and District 15 titles on his way to qualifying for the NJSIAA state tournament. 
  • Major: Criminal Justice

 
Brian Sidle | Projected: 285 lbs.

  • Transfer from Roger Williams University. Will be a sophomore in 2020-21.
  • Product of long-time state powerhouse Saint Joseph-Montvale.
  • Two-time state qualifier and First Team All-Bergen County selection for the Green Knights.
  • Major: Finance


Elijah Varona | Projected: 125 lbs.

  • First-ever out-of-state commit.
  • Two-time Florida state champion.
  • One of the top Greco-Roman high school athletes in the nation, Varona was a runner-up at the 2016 USA Wrestling Junior Nationals and earned a spot on the Junior World Team. 
  • High-level pedigree, spent part of the 2018-19 season with the Finger Lakes Wrestling Club at the Olympic Regional training center, an organization associated with Cornell Wrestling's senior and prep level athletes
  • Major: Management (Global Business)

 
Lance Wissing | Projected: 165 or 174 lbs.

  • Transfer from Northampton Community College. Will be a freshman athletically in 2020-21.
  • Expected to lead the Gothic Knight middleweights as a model of stability after developing in on of the state's most storied programs in Phillipsburg High School. 
  • Cracked one of the toughest lineups in New Jersey during his senior year at Phillipsburg where Wissing posted a 41-6 record en route to a District 1 title and a round of 12 finish at the state tournament. 
  • Major: Psychology
