Sam Toney (Plainfield, NJ/Williamstown) and
Jaimik Moore (Hackensack, NJ/Hackensack) and junior shooting guard
Denzel Banks (Newark, NJ/East Orange Campus) were all named to the 2019-20
New Jersey Athletic Conference Men's Basketball All-Conference team the league announced in voting by the NJAC's 10 head coaches.
Toney, the 2018 and 2019 NJAC Player of the Year, was picked Second-Team All-NJAC by this year's coaches and
Banks joined him at Second-Team All-NJAC.
Moore was named Honorable Mention All-NJAC in his only season in an NJCU uniform despite missing six games due to injury.
Sam Toney (Plainfield, NJ/Williamstown) is NJCU's first four-time
All-NJAC selection in 33 years.
"It's a team sport, but any time you get individual accolades is a good thing for the program," said 13th-year head coach
Marc Brown. "It's a good thing for these guys individually, and Denzel has something to shoot for next year."
SAM TONEY
Toney, the 2019-20 DIII News Preseason Division III National Player of the Year, had an outstanding season but on a strong offensive team, did not need to put up the gaudy statistics he had in years past, prompting the league's coaches to vote him to the Second Team.
Still,
Toney, the 2018 and 2019 NJAC Player of the Year, finishes his career as the first Gothic Knight to be a four-time All-NJAC selection since
Johnny Mayers from 1984-87—33 years ago.
Mayers (1912 points) is directly above
Toney on NJCU's all-time scoring list.
Toney is fourth in school history with 1,755 points with the potential for an ECAC Division III Tournament appearance next week.
Regardless,
Toney, NJCU's all-time leader in three-point field goals (230) still was NJCU's leader in points (15.1 per game), rebounding (6.2 per game) and blocks (21) this season. In 26 games, he shot 43.3 percent from the field (132-305), 36.0 percent from three-point range (54-150) and 73.5 percent from the line (75-102) and produced 393 points and 160 rebounds (48 offensive, 112 defensive). He added 1.5 assists (38) and 1.0 steals (26) with only 43 turnovers all season in 734 minutes of action. He scored in double figures in 23 of 26 games and netted 20 or more seven times with a high of 27 against Rowan on January 25. He generated three double-doubles.
"For Sam it's a nice award to end his career; he had an outstanding career. I thought he should've been at least First Team," said
Brown.
Toney, a two-time NJAC Player of the Week this year, was a 2018-19 NABC First-Team All-American and finished his career as NJCU's only two-time All-American. He was the
2019 NJAC Male Athlete of the Year. Toney is just the fifth two-time NJAC Player of the Year in the NJAC since 1980.
Denzel Banks (Newark, NJ/East Orange Campus) already has more than
700 points in two seasons and is a two-time All-NJAC selection.
In the NJAC statistical rankings,
Toney listed eight in rebounding, ninth in three-pointers made (2.1 per game), 10th in scoring and blocked shots, 12th in defensive rebounding (4.3 per game), 13th in three-point percentage, 14th in offensive rebounding (1.8 per game), 19th in three-point percentage, 20th in field goal percentage and 25th in steals.
In 18 NJAC games, he ranked in the Top 10 in three major categories: seventh in blocked shots (0.9 per game), eighth in scoring (15.0 per game) and ninth in rebounding (6.2 per game).
DENZEL BANKS
Banks, an Honorable Mention All-NJAC selection as a sophomore in his first season in Jersey City, was second on the team in scoring and rebounding and moved up to Second-Team All-NJAC honors this year.
He tallied 383 points this year and has 705 points in two seasons. He averaged 14.7 points, 6.0 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.7 steals per game, contributing 60 assists and 43 steals in 26 games, averaging 27.9 minutes per outing. He shot 43.2 percent from the field (145-336) and 75.2 percent from the line (79-105). He scored in double figures 18 times with two double-doubles. He scored 20+ in a game seven times with a high of 28 against Rowan on January 25.
In 20 games, Jaimik Moore (Hackensack, NJ/Hackensack)
averaged 13.9 points and 5.6 rebounds.
"I thought Denzel had a great shot at First Team also," said
Brown. "But I'm happy for him. For him to make that leap from Honorable Mention to Second Team shows his improvement."
In the NJAC statistical rankings,
Banks is fifth in offensive rebounding (2.5 per game), eighth in steals, ninth in rebounding, 10th in free throw percentage, 11th in scoring, 16th in assist/turnover ratio (1.0), 19th in assists, 20th in defensive rebounding (3.5 per game) and 21st in field goal percentage. In 18 NJAC games, he ranked in the Top 10 in seventh in steals (1.6 per game) and offensive rebounding (2.4 per game) and 10th in rebounding (5.9 per game) and was 11th in scoring (14.6) and free throw percentage (.769).
JAIMIK MOORE
Moore, a transfer from Division II Claflin, scored 277 points with 112 rebounds (47 offensive, 65 defensive) in 20 games, averaging 13.9 points and 5.6 rebounds. He chipped in 42 assists (2.1 per game) and 26 steals (1.3 per game) in 27.4 minutes per contest. He shot 81.5 percent from the line (66-81), 47.2 percent from the field (94-199) and 36.5 percent from three-point range (23-63). Moore scored in double figures 15 times with four 20-point performances and had three double-doubles.
Moore was named NJAC Player of the Week on December 30 and selected to the D3hoops.com National Team of the Week. He was also named to the D3hoops.com Classic All-Tournament Team during NJCU's trip to Las Vegas—its first regular season games ever played west of the Mississippi River.
"Jaimik was our most valuable player,"
Brown praised, "so I thought he had a shot at First Team, as well. I think the fact that he missed six games hurt him a bit. He was our most consistent player."
In the NJAC statistical rankings, he is fifth in free throw percentage, seventh in offensive boards (2.4 per game), 13th in scoring and rebounding, 14th in field goal percentage, 16th in steals, 18th in three-point percentage and 22nd in assists. He missed NJCU's first three NJAC games of the season but still averaged 13.8 points and 4.9 rebounds in league play.
