New Jersey City University's see-saw 2019-20 campaign received promising news on March 2 with the Gothic Knights selected for the postseason for the fifth consecutive season—its 36th postseason appearance in the last 38 years. NJCU (13-13) will continue its season in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Tournament, beginning on Wednesday, March 4. It is the 22nd appearance in the ECAC Tournament in program history.
The Gothic Knights, one of two members of the New Jersey Athletic Conference selected for the field, will be the No. 3 seed in their section of the four-pod bracket and will meet No. 2 seeded John Jay College (20-6) on Wednesday, March 4 at 7:30 p.m. in New York City.
The winner of the game faces the winner of No. 4 Baruch and No. 1 Widener on Friday, March 6 in the quarterfinals at Gwynedd Mercy University in Gwynedd Valley, Pa. The semifinals will be held on Saturday, March 7 with the finals contested on Sunday, March 8. The entire championship weekend will hosted by Gwynedd Mercy.
The Bloodhounds were the CUNYAC conference regular season champions but lost in the championship game to Brooklyn College, 57-55, in overtime, on February 25 and did not receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. John Jay is 9-1 over its last 10 games and 11-2 at home this season.
All-time it will be the 17th meeting between NJCU and John Jay—the last coming on November 19, 2013. NJCU has never lost to the Bloodhounds, owning a perfect 16-0 all-time record in the leads the all-time series. It will be the second meeting ever in the postseason; then Jersey City State defeated John Jay in the 1983 ECAC Metro Semifinals, 82-67, in Staten Island, N.Y. on March 4, 1983.
Prior to this season, the Knights had qualified for three consecutive NCAA Division III Tournaments during the 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons.
NJCU's last appearance in the ECAC Tournament came in the 2015-16 season under a different format. Previously, the four primary ECAC Division III regions—Metro, North, South and New England—held separate eight-team tournaments, with each determining its own winner. Now, the top 16 teams from across all four ECAC regions will compete over a five-day stretch for the overall ECAC championship. The selection committee chose 14 teams for this year's field, giving Gwynedd Mercy and Drew University opening round byes.
It will be the 86th postseason game NJCU has played in its history—45th ECAC Tournament game to go with 41 NCAA Tournament contests. It will be NJCU's 43rd postseason appearance all-time as an NCAA Division III program.
NJCU has won a record seven ECAC Metro championships—1981, 1983, 1993, 1994, 2001, 2006 and 2016—the most of any school. Between 21 ECAC and 21 NCAA Tournaments, it owns an all-time postseason ledger of 47-38 (.553). The Knights own an all-time 30-14 (.682) record in 44 ECAC tournament games.
