JERSEY CITY, N.J. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | The
New Jersey City University baseball team will embark on a five-day, six-game Texas spring trip this weekend, marking the first time in the history of the program the Gothic Knights will compete in games west of the Eastern Time Zone. The trip runs from March 7-11.
Â
The Gothic Knights departed New Jersey late Friday night and will play games against four schools, including two of the better programs in the nation, with contests against Texas Lutheran (receiving votes), Howard Payne, No. 4 ranked Trinity (Texas) and Southwestern.
Â
"Over that last four years we compiled a 41-14 record away from spring trip and conference games," stated
Jerry Smith, in his ninth year at the helm of the program. "During this time we achieved a school record 13-win March, a 20+ win season, and school records for wins in a one, two, three and four-year period. But with all of this success, the conference playoffs have remained allusive. Playing in a Division III area that rivals our conference will hopefully prepare us come April."Â
Â
"To have an opportunity to play at the campuses of some of the most elite programs in the country—those are the type of moments we try to create for our guys,"
Smith added.
Â
The six games will mark the first time NJCU has ever competed in the Central Time zone in program history. The baseball team will also play games west of the Mississippi River for the first time.
Â
Prior to this season the only games NJCU baseball has ever played outside of the Eastern time zone was in 2016 when the Knights played in Puerto Rico at the Clemente Cup; Puerto Rico is Atlantic Standard Time.
Â
The last time NJCU did not play a spring trip game within the state of Florida while remaining in the continental United States was in 2000 when the Knights traveled to Mount Vernon, Georgia.
Â
The historic spring trip occurs the same season the NJCU men's basketball team played regular season games outside of the Eastern Time Zone for the first time in 53 years (December, 1966), when it played in the 10th annual D3hoops.com Classic in Las Vegas.
