NCAA Division III Week Academic Salute: 49 Student-Athletes Achieved Dean’s List Honors in Fall 2019

April 18, 2020

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | During NCAA Division III Week 2020, the New Jersey City University department of athletics salutes the academic success of its student-athletes who excelled in the classroom during the Fall 2019 semester. Overall 49 student-athletes achieved Dean's List honors during the fall semester, earning a grade point average of 3.50 or better. The 49 Dean's List recipients is the most in one semester in program history.

Additionally, eight student-athletes earned a perfect 4.00 GPA during the fall 2019 semester, including three seniors—Kayla Clarke (East Rutherford, NJ/Becton Regional) of women's bowling, Bill Feehan (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant Boro) of the baseball team and Ben Harder (South River, NJ/South River) of men's indoor/outdoor track and field. Also earning 4.00 GPAs in the fall were Orlando Alcantara of men's soccer, three-sport freshman Xarial Chandler (East Orange, NJ/University) of women's volleyball and women's indoor/outdoor track and field, Dan McLaughlin (Clifton, NJ/Clifton) from baseball,  Genesis Torres (Colonia, NJ/Colonia) of women's soccer and Lamya Young (Audubon, NJ/Audubon) of women's cross country and indoor/outdoor track and field.

Baseball had more than 20 percent of the Dean's List recipients with 10 student-athletes selected among the 30 total players on the roster. Women's cross country/track and field led the women's programs with seven student-athletes earning a 3.50 or better GPA. Men's cross country/track and field had six selections, followed by men's golf, men's soccer, women's soccer and women's volleyball with four each. Women's bowling had the best percentage with three of its five active players—60 percent—achieving Dean's List in the fall.

In NCAA Division III athletics, the classroom is the primary setting for preparing student-athletes. Competing in collegiate athletics is the second part of the student-athlete experience. Combined with leadership opportunities, community outreach initiatives, campus life and the ability to work, Division III understands that academics are more than just GPAs, test scores and majors; it is a comprehensive learning experience that develops successful leaders and professionals.
