Brites Scores as Women's Soccer Shuts Kean Out in First Half but Falls 3-1

UNION, N.J. — The New Jersey City University women's soccer team put forward a strong effort on Wednesday evening, Oct. 13, on the road as the Gothic Knights took on Kean University in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play. Unfortunately sophomore Kim Brites' (Carteret, N.J./Carteret) lone goal was not enough to surmount the deficit and Kean came away with the 3-1 defeat of NJCU.

Jersey City (2-7-3, 0-5-1 NJAC) held the Cougars (5-5-2, 3-2-1 NJAC) off the board throughout the entirety of the first half as sophomore keeper Angie Paz (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Township) made four of her five saves in the first 45 minutes. Her first came off a free kick following a foul just outside the box in the 17th. She then stopped a Kean opportunity off a corner kick in the 26th. Paz also notched saves in the 35th and 39th before the half came to a close.

Minutes into the second half, Kean struck first and made it 1-0 in the 52nd following a low shot from the far end of the box. NJCU finally notched its first shot on goal early in the 58th when junior midfielder Michelle Taras (Newark, N.J./Newark East Side) took aim at the top left corner of the net, however the Kean keeper turned it aside, which ultimately led to a successful Cougar scoring chance in the latter stages of the 58th to make it 2-0.

Late in the 63rd minute, Kean earned another corner opportunity and was able to convert in front in the 64th and make it 3-0. Paz was tested in the 67th but managed to keep it out of the back of the net and the score remained the same until the Cougars were called for a foul in the box in the 85th minute. It was then that Brites converted on the penalty to make it 3-1. Unfortunately that was the last chance for NJCU as, aside from senior midfielder Victoria Gil (South River, N.J./South River) getting called for a yellow in the 86th, no action took place before the final whistle.
