Linebaugh's 11-Save Performance Not Enough to Propel Men's Soccer Past Kean

JERSEY CITY, N.J. — The New Jersey City University men's soccer team fought through another low-scoring New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) battle on Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 13, but unfortunately was not able to muster enough offensive opportunities at home on Robert L. McNulty Memorial Field at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex. The Gothic Knights fell to Kean University by a score of 2-0.

NJCU (8-6-1, 0-6 NJAC) was fortunate early on as the Cougars (8-4-1, 3-3 NJAC) were called for a pair of yellow cards in the first 20 minutes of play. The latter card was followed by a pair of good looks for Kean, however senior netminder Nick Linebaugh (Linden, N.J./St. Benedict's Prep) was able to turn both of them away. Freshman midfielder Jeremy Jordan (Guayaquil, Ecuador/ANAVI) notched the Gothic Knights' first shot of the afternoon in the 30th minute, but that was stopped as well.

Unfortunately that was Jersey City's only shot on goal on the day. Linebaugh was tested once again off a corner in the 35th but he emerged unscathed. Then, after some jawing in front of the Gothic Knights' net in the 37th, senior captain back Nelson Segovia (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen) stepped in to defend his teammates, however he was called for the retaliating yellow on the play. Linebaugh made one more save in the 44th to keep it scoreless heading into the break.

The Cougars continued to pepper Linebaugh in the second half, however the Gothic Knight keeper managed to stand tall for the most part. He stopped the first attempt early in the 56th, however later that minute the Knights turned it over in the defensive zone and Kean picked up a four-on-two opportunity, resulting in the day's first goal. Linebaugh stopped the next six shots he faced to finish the day with a total of 11 — his second-most of the season — before the Cougars snuck one more by him in the waning moments of the match during the 89th. Kean sent a cross in front and Linebaugh managed to get a finger on it, however it continued to dribble toward the near side of the net where it was tapped in for the second and final tally of the day.

Up Next:
After a few days break, NJCU returns to the pitch for a road NJAC match on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 16, against Rutgers-Camden. The Gothic Knights and Scarlet Raptors are scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff in Camden, N.J.
