Women’s Soccer Wraps up Season with Final Game on the Road

WAYNE, N.J. — The New Jersey City University women's soccer team finished off its season with a 1-0 loss to William Paterson University on the road in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play on Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 27. NJCU managed to land just one shot less on goal compared to the Pioneers, but unfortunately were unable to convert on them.

Jersey City (3-10-3, 0-8-1 NJAC) started off quick with back-to-back corner kicks against the Pioneers (8-8-0, 3-6-0 NJAC) within the first two minutes of the game. In the 12th minute, NJCU sophomore midfielder Krysti Alejandro (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) took the first shot on goal, only to be saved by the Pioneers' goalkeeper. Following another NJCU corner kick, sophomore forward Shea Ramirez (Bogota, N.J./Immaculate Conception) landed a shot on goal in the 16th minute.

Alejandro landed another shot, while Ramirez found two more shot opportunities on goal for the remainder of the first half. In the 40th minute, Pioneer Julia Fiorito scored the first and only goal of the game. WPU attempted another shot on goal, which was saved by sophomore NJCU goalkeeper Angie Paz (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Township) to close out the first period.

Jersey City senior goalkeeper Cidney Lee-Sam (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) was substituted into the game in the second half. The home team held possession for majority of the period. In the 88th minute, senior midfielder Victoria Gil (South River, N.J./South River) received a yellow card. Seconds later, a pair of WPU players each received a yellow and red card, closing out the half, and the Gothic Knights' final game of the season.

Sophomore forward Kim Brites (Carteret, N.J./Carteret) finished the year as the team's leader in goals (9) and points (19), while junior midfielder Michelle Taras (Newark, N.J./Newark East Side) led the squad in assists (3). Junior back Arame Diouf (Weehawken, N.J./Memorial) was second on the team in goals (3) and points (6).
