Men’s Soccer Falls Behind in NJAC Match-Up on the Road Against Stockton

GALLOWAY, N.J. – The New Jersey City University men's soccer team was unable to make a comeback after falling behind 5-0 tonight, Wednesday, October 6, against Stockton.

The Gothic Knights (7-4-1, 0-4 NJAC) couldn't get passed the Ospreys (8-4-1, 4-0 NJAC) leaving them scoreless in their fourth New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game of the season. Within the first five minutes, NJCU junior Christopher Castillo (North Bergen, N.J./High Tech) was quick to make the first shot of the night, missing wide. Unfortunately, momentum switched when the Osprey's Ervin Gjeli scored the first goal of the game in the 16th minute. Stockton held possession for majority of the half, scoring its second and third goals within the next 10 minutes. Jersey City sophomore Aytor Valdez (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) managed to get the last shot of the half but missed high.

The Gothic Knights started the second half strong with three back-to-back shots after two corner kicks. Sophomore Anthony Salmeron (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen) took the first shot, which was saved by the Osprey's goalkeeper. Sophomore Jorkaef Fallas (North Bergen, N.J./Hudson Catholic) landed the following two shots, missing the first high while the second shot was saved. In the 55th minute, Stockton found its fourth goal, leaving the Gothic Knights down 4-0.

Intensity in the final 30 minutes heated up as total of seven yellow cards were given out – six to NJCU. Fallas, senior Nelson Segovia (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen), and rookies Joey Velasquez (Clifton, N.J./Clifton), Jeremy Jordan (Guayaquil, Ecuador/ANAVI) and Thomas Vera (Greenbrook, N.J./Watchung Hills) were five of the players who received cards. Jersey City senior Luis Laing (Jersey City, N.J./William L. Dickinson) took his only shot of the night at the 66th minute mark, missing high. Towards the end of the half, the Ospreys made its fifth and final goal of the game. The final two yellow cards were given to NJCU junior Piero Urteaga (Clifton, N.J./Passaic County Tech) and Stockton's Jonathan Santos.
