Men's Wrestling Makes Home Debut, Takes Three Bouts In Loss to Castleton

February 12, 2021

JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The New Jersey City University men's wrestling program held the program's first home competition of its abbreviated debut season within the John J. Moore Athletic and Fitness Center on February 12, dropping a match to the Castleton University Spartans by a score of 39-14.

Highlighting the day for the Gothic Knights (0-2) was freshman Ty Bailey (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Boro)'s win by fall in 3:44 at 165 pounds, marking the rookie's first collegiate victory. Bailey would pick up his second collegiate victory by fall later in the day during extra matches. Senior Rob Cleary (Edison, N.J./Bound Brook) and junior Kyle Hillermeier (Howell, N.J./Freehold Township) added a technical fall and decision in the loss to remain undefeated on the season. Castleton, coming off a win against #8 Stevens Institute of Technology, moves to 3-0 with the victory.

The Knights appeared to be off to hot start as freshman George Rivera (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) held an 8-2 advantage midway through the second period, but his Castleton opponent was able to land a spladle to secure a fall and put the Spartans up 6-0. After a forfeit at 133 pounds and freshman David Guerra (Belleville, N.J./Belleville) dropping his debut match, Cleary exploded for five takedowns en route to his 18-2 technical fall to put the Gothic Knights on the board. Bailey would add his bonus-point victory two bouts later. With the team score decided in Castleton's favor, Kyle Hillermeier (Howell, N.J./Freehold Township) gutted out a 4-3 victory to give the Knights their third bout win of the day, topping their two bout victories against the same opponent on January 30 in Vermont.

NJCU returns to action next Saturday, Feb. 20th, against Alfred State College in Alfred, N.Y.
