PITMAN, N.J. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Freshman guard
Hakeem Wilson (Newark, N.J./North Star Academy) has been named
New Jersey Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week for week two of the abbreviated 2020-21 season for games played the weekend of February 12-13, the league office announced on February 15.
Wilson averaged 10.0 points, 2.5 assists, 2.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals in 22.4 minutes per game as NJCU (3-1, 3-1 NJAC) split with Stockton University — losing 85-73 on February 12 in Galloway, N.J. before playing a major role in the Gothic Knights' come-from-behind, 67-65 buzzer-beating win on February 13 at home against the Ospreys.
In that buzzer-beating moment,
Wilson took the inbounds pass in a game tied at 65-65 with 5.9 seconds left and went nearly coast-to-coast before finding teammate
Denzel Banks (Newark, NJ/East Orange Campus) with the assist on his game-winning, fall-away jumper to unleash a dogpile on the baseline. The highlight has been featured on multiple television stations throughout the region, including CBS2 in New York and News 12 New Jersey.
Wilson scored 16 points off the bench in the win over Stockton, shooting 6-of-13 and 3-of-4 from the line with three assists and three steals. A day earlier, he had four points, three rebounds and two assists in a loss to Stockton while making his first career start.
The 6-foot-0 newcomer is a transfer from Division I North Carolina Central University where he did not play before transferring to NJCU. A Sports Management major,
Wilson was one of the top scorers in Essex County his senior year in 2018-19. He was a four-year varsity player at North Star Academy in Newark, N.J. for head coach and former NJCU assistant coach Dennis Leonard.
